I'd like to prevent a buttercream frosting from losing its shape in a warm or humid environment.

I know buttercream frosting is full of butter so it will melt, but does anyone know of something I can add to make it not?

I'm icing cupcakes and the only way I can get the icing to hold is in the fridge.

I'm from Australian where Shortening isn't sold so any recipes without it would be appreciated.

keep the frosting in the refrigerator to let it get nice and cold. then when the cupcakes are done and have cooled put them in the refrigerator and when both are nice and cold take them out and ice them and stick them back into the refrigerator and keep them there untill serving. :)

Buttercream frosting might nicely be made with vegetable shortening, or a blend of shortening & butter. in spite of everything, it is going to be quite tender if the climate is quite heat. the only element i'm able to think of of that would shop the frosting stiffer is to function greater confectioner's sugar. in case you think of that would make the frosting too candy, try undeniable corn starch. that still won't shop it from melting altogether, so refrigeration may well be your maximum suitable determination.

I'm not really a baker...but I did help my sister when I was very young with her cake business...Buttercream...is a sensitive mixture..I would par freeze it..in the freezer for maybe 10 minutes....let it harden enough to not melt in the heat...but still pliable enough for spreading...just what we used to do on hot days.

There is something called a boiled icing which is basically a hot sugar syrup whisked into beaten egg whites aka an Italian meringue

The only thing I can think of that you might do is add vanilla pudding to the frosting to help hold it.

Keep them in the fridge. That's the best way.
