I was teaching my friend how to drive stick so I put it in 4L so it would be easier to get the idea, and when we got going the jeep began to move back and forth as we drove, sort of like bucking us.

What the hell is up?
Is it cuz he wasnt steady enough on the gas pedal?
This only happened at low rpm.

Are the tires "fighting" eachother?

DO NOT use 4 Lo on dry pavement, that's a good way to trash your transfer case.

4 Lo is used for crawling, when you need low speed but high torque/power, and it definitely is NOT the range to use if you're trying to teach someone how to drive a stick shift, because the gas/clutch ratio is just too weird for a beginner. I've been driving my stick for 8 years, and I still get jumpiness when I go into first in 4-Lo.

That sounds normal. Low-range amplifies every touch of the gas pedal and it can be really twitchy if you're not used to it.

True true--using 4wd on pavement will wear things out if you do any turning. Generally it'll just slip the tires instead of breaking something, but it does increase drivetrain wear.
It's fine if you're going in a straight line....like up a boat ramp.

DON'T EVER USE 4X4 ON DRY PAVEMENT!!! You will break things if you do it for too long. The only exception is if you have Full-time 4x4 or all wheel drive. He was probably just lugging the motor though. Don't worry too much about your truck though, breaking stuff by driving in 4x4 on dry pavement takes a while, and if you broke anything, you'd already know it.
