One reason most Hinds are vegetarian.

In addition to the Hindi belief that you may be eating the body that has the soul of someone related to you because of how the wheel of reincarnation turns there is:

In American jingoism it means any thing that a person holds near and dear to their religious thought system.

Another minor use is something valued and should remain untouched by anyone unless there is a agreed upon change or opening of it.

Actually cows are sacred to the Hindus but the term is usually in reference to a persons strongly held beliefs that are unfounded. It started with the image of the cow that the Hebrews made when Moses went up on the mountain to be with God and get the 10 Commandments

Well, the cow is sacred to Hinduism. But it's also a term used to indicate something we "simply can't touch". An example is Social Security. If a political party decided to do away with it, it would likely spell their doom.

Another is children. I can remember in the 1980s a court case where a man accused of molesting a child was prohibited to cross examine a child who said he did it for fear the cross-examination might "psychologically scar" the child. Many felt it was better if this man was innocent and wound up in prison for decades than to "scar" the child. I believe a court wound up throwing out the child's testimony and it turned out the man was innocent after all.

I oppose the existence of all sacred cows.

Cow is a sacred animal for hindus...bcoz cow gives us milk..and we know that cow milk is very good for health for a baby as well as a old man..and also we can make so many things from cow milk...like butter, cheese etc we also use milk for so many tastey fud stuffs like pudding, ice creams etc...and also in olden days a family is known to be wealthy by the number of cows they own and also in wars the defeated king has to give valuables to the victorious king and amoung the valuables the most valuable is the cow...and also in old scriptures we can see that to donate a cow is the most good thing when compared to other type of donations...besides all this cow dung is used as manure and also to produce cooking gas(gobar gas)...cow dung and urine is also used as ayurvedic medicine...so we can proudly say that cow is the most sacred animal in the world...so stop killing and eating them...

Hindu's believe the cow to be sacred and don't eat the flesh of it because it produces more food alive than dead. unlike the western world they don't have the means to breed millions of cows for slaughter, so they preserve what they have. i think its a logical approach to food supply, you can get plenty of meat from lamb, chicken and what not. as far as i know they don't worship/pray to the cow, their not stupid.

There is no sacred cow. A cow is for food of mankind and not to be worship. Worshipping cow is prohibited by God..

It's the one that they refer to when they say "holy cow".

There's also a sacred fish that goes by the name of "holy mackerel".

Not sure if there's a sacred rodent or not.

The Sacred Cow in The Bible:

Exodus 32: 7,8. The Lord said to Moses, "Go back down at once, because your people, whom you led out of Egypt, have sinned and rejected me. They have already left the way that I commanded them to follow; they have made a bull-calf out of melted gold and have worshipped it and offered sacrifices to it. They are saying that this is their god, who led them out of Egypt.
