A lot of people are doing away with this.Personally,I like "natural" dogs, but some many people prefer the docked tails and cropped ears that so many breeds have.In England, these practices are no longer allowed. But,no,I don't think it's "necessary" for any breed;dogs have tails and long ears for a reason.Dogs with naturally upright ears and short tails have been bred for the look, without causing them pain, although the very young puppy seems to forget the pain faster than an older dog would, especially if the docking is done by an experienced vet or breeder.

Hey,why are Amanda's and Levi's answers identical?

I do agree with Tom L. about some of the hunting dogs needing tails docked and dewclaws removed, because it makes it safer for the dogs ( no broken tails or torn dewclaws.) I adopted a dog once who was pregnant, and she had double dewclaws on her back feet,as did three of her pups.We had the puppies' dewclaws removed when they were three days old,and they were fine afterwards. And,when the pups were weaned,we had Jessie ( mama dog) spayed and had her double dewclaws removed, because she did NOT like them being clipped and they had a tendency to catch on things. She acted as if nothing had happened. So,tails and dewclaws on very young pups isn't as tortuous as it seems, but I would never, ever have a dog's ears cropped.

I don't know where everone gets this. There is a reason for the tail docking. My husband and I raise boxers. We have to do this between 2-4 days old. This actually doesn't hurt it stings like piercing your ears because at that age it's only cartalidge. They do need it done because there tail will not be straight and/or easily broken and that will cause an amputation or a rebreaking which you can imagine how painful that would be.One more thing as far as the ear cropping AKC does not require that anymore to show the dogs. I never agreed with the cropping but the tail docking I understand.

It is illegal where I live too and I'm pretty sure that the breed standards have been adjusted reflect this.

"All jurisdictions have now introduced bans effectively limiting tail docking of dogs to registered Veterinarians in therapeutic situations only. Breeders or owners will be able to show dogs with entire tails as a docked tail is not a mandatory requirement of any breed standard recognised by the Australian National Kennel Council."

There is no ear cropping in Australia either.

Hi TOM L, check this article out: http://www.dogstuff.info/dewclaws_lanting.html
email me and let me know what you think.
I have seen a ripped dew or two and it is very painful for the dog myself....
I still routinely de dewclaw my pups, as we show them, and work schutzhund, but thought this was interesting.
One of my friends dogs was "asked to leave" the AKC ring for being a tailed rott, Ch. in Germany, Sch 3, etc. and we were trying to get an AKC championship on him here. Asked to leave the ring twice...
I don't personally care either way, as far as looks go, I kind of like the docked rott look, but it wouldn't bother me if mine were docked or not. I don't think it is some horrible practice any more than circumsion in a newborn boy.... just my opinion, like the horrified questioneer....

Most registered dogs have it done because it is breed standard. Like in Rottwielers. But on the other hand if you dock some breeds the dog can not be registered. Pit bulls are not supposed to have docked tails.

Tail docking and ear cropping is necessary for certain breeds that want to enter a dog show. It's been banned in Australia and the U.K., I think. It's not necessary for dogs as long as you don't want to show them. I'm against it, by the way.

I had a toy poodle who did not have a docked tail, and I loved his plume tail. Someone said "I can't see having a poodle that doesn't have a docked tail." She was suggesting I get the dogs tail docked as an adult, which is crazy. I think it's crazy that people dock dogs tails when they are puppies to begin with. I also don't like the surgery to make the dog's ears stand up. Come on, what's wrong with floppy ears?

If I'm not mistaken, it's actually been banned in the UK recently for being a cruel practice.

The thing is, most breeders just do it automatically when the pups are a few days old, so pet owners have no choice about whether they want it docked or not.

Unfortunately in the US, in order to show certain breeds of dogs this practice is required. For this reason the breeders typically have it done at about a week of age, so most people have no choice in the matter if they don't want to show their dog they're stuck with it.

The good thing about this procedure is that it is done at such a young age, so the puppies heal much faster. If we waited until they were older, it would be far more traumatic

I think it's inhumane what some people will do to their pets. I don't\'t believe in docking, declawing, debarking, ear cropping, or any of those things. What is the point? Why alter God's perfection?
