Port is the best wine for chocolate and chocolate cake. Port is a fortified red wine with brandy, thus it is sweet yet has high alcohol content. Combined with chocolate, Port had the sweetness to complement the sugar in the cake/chocolate, as well as complementing the bitterness of chocolate and adding fruit flavor to the dessert. There are many great brands of Port, many of them are made in Portugal (Sandeman, Dow, Warre, priced from $10 to vintage ports that cost from $100 and up). However, California is making some great port as well, including Heitz Port ($35), V. Sattui Vintage Port ($30), Ridge Petit Syrah Essence ($30/half), Von Strasser Port ($50/half). Another cheapie I like is Lion's Peak Port ($25). Also had a good bottle of chocolate Port tonight from Bonny Doon ($25) - wonderful.
If you don't want something sweet, then I would recommend a mid-price to expensive Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. A good Cab or Merlot has the flavor to complement the sweetness as well as the fruity/berry quality that also goes well with chocolate as well. I have had chocolate tasting with Revana Cab ($105), Barbour Cab ($120), Pride Cab ($65), Pride Merlot ($60), Duckhorn Three Palm Merlot ($85), all are wonderful.

I agree with those who recommend a Port. A great buy in Port is:
Trevor Jones NV Jonesy Port
This is a full-bodied Australian Port that has been blended with an average age of 46 years. Enjoy the sweet flavors of ripe plums, maple syrup, and hazelnuts. Rated 93 points by Robert Parker. (Definitely a best buy at only $10.29!)

If you ever tried to decorate a cake, you would avoid the red velvet like the plague! I take chocolate fudge any-day!

I could go on forever on this subject but I'll keep it simple. A nice port or better yet a shiraz. Perfect... There's always the old stand-by champagne

No idea.
But just a warning - both red wine and chocolate are known triggers for migraines.
