I say "Just a minute." You know what bugs me? When I'm in the bathroom, and someone twists the doorknob hard under the assumption that it's empty even though the door's closed. People should knock first but many don't. Good thing I always lock it, but it's still rude.

You can be polite if you don't know them very well and just say, "Be out in a minute" or "Just a minute". If you know them well, you can joke a bit as well like "John is not available" or "This room is PRE-occupied" or "This seat is already taken". It all depends on how comfortable you feel. It would be more rude not to say something than to let them know you will be out in a bit.

All you need to say is 'Just a moment' or 'I'll be right out' ~ no-one is going to want to 'share', so they'll take the hint.
Mind you, if they come back and start beating on the door, it's time to get a move on!
Cheers :-)

I like to knock back. It tends to get a laugh.

Make a loud enough noise for them to hear. If they have any sense, they'll let it go.

A lot of people say, "I'm in here". A more polite thing to say is "Occupied" or "One moment please".
I've also heard people simply say "Yes?" or "Hello."
