You asked a really good question, and I apologize for a longer answer but I think this is the best answer I have at the moment.

I feel we only screw ourselves when we confuse our own western narcissism and general Islamic dysfunction as being specifically against us. It's not about us. The Chinese, Indians, Japanese, Russians all are equally as endangered by radicalized Islam, I'll explain below.

Left to it's own devices, Islam has yet to undergo anything resembling the Christian equivalent of the Reformation or the Counter reformation. Prior to that, Christians were even more willing to pick up the sword and die for the Cross than Muslims. After the decimations of nearly 80 years of continuous war. After the Peace of Westphalia, Christianity became practically speaking much less given to warfare in the name of the Lord.

European warfare became so confused and bloody and desperate and devolved to a point where possibly one of the most "liberal" and "radical" concepts decried by modern day Evangelicals was conceived.

The concept of "Separation of Church and State", was founded originally on the principle that "the state" might/could conduct warfare but that "the church" should only take issues where interests of faith are directly concerned. This was not some radical liberal view of some sketchy fringe philosopher, this idea was primarily conceived of by none less than the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church at the time. The confusion and counter-interests of all the various factions compelled this "solution" to the various problems which existed at the time. European warfare in the space of less than 50 years became the province of nation states rather than trans-kingdom/national religious bloodfests.

Islam has yet to clear this fundamental philosophical hurdle. In the Islamic viewpoint it's STILL , "Church and State....Perfect Together."

As we saw when the dictatorial top was taken off the religious pressure-cooker that is Iraq, Sunnis and Shia REALLY HATE one another and with generous funding from petrodollars and their respective Saudi and Iranian benefactors, are perfectly content to soak the streets of Iraq with blood.

What advise today might we give, had some modern-day Secular Humanists or Hindus or Chinese Communists or Capitalist Americans (to pick a random unrelated groups) been plopped into the middle of some internecine intra-Christian war of the 1400's , the best policy would be to make some boats and get the hell away from the fighting.

And so it is today, our best policy is to build some fusion reactors, and bug the heck out unless we have no other options.

Islam or just fundamentalism today is far more dangerous to its adherents and factions as well as everyone else with the modern technology and weaponry and suicidally fundamentalist tendencies of some of the factions. As a society we do well to make ourselves as scarce as possible until it's unavoidable that we become involved.

For some 9/11 was that moment, however our politicians and many of our military are thinking conventionally and clearly not thinking about the ramifications of our 'bring it on' aggressive response to those attacks, however viscerally satisfying that response might have been, it may not have "been prudent at this juncture".

I suspect, however, it will break down in one of two ways,

Sooner or later, some terrorist group or Islamist nation is going to use nuclear weapons

If the US is VERY VERY lucky, that initial use will not be against the US mainland or critical US interests. In this instance we may wish to consider whether the Iraqi invasion was genuinely in the best interests of the US people and not the indulgence of a belligerent administration.

An Islamist on Islamist nuclear exchange would very quickly have the result of bringing the fetish of nuclear weapons into the correctly stark contrast these gruesome weapons bring upon their users and potential recipients.

I suspect if someone uses nuclear weapons somewhere against the US, we may be compelled to warm up either or both of two equally unpalatable ideas.

Either "tucking tail" as a function of national necessity (if some "Jericho" type event occurred) OR
Conversely committing ourselves completely to the cremation and systematic decimation of the more significant number of at a minimum several tens of millions of Muslim fundamentalist supporters in 1/2 dozen countries.

Morally the last choice is of course the most historically repugnant since in the final analysis such a response - whether forced or by choice, would practically from the perspective of souls lost make us no better than any of the worst regimes which history has to offer.

As fubared as it may seem, those hundreds of nuclear weapons quietly sitting idly are still probably protecting us, from just such an unthinkable event.

This is because believe it or not Americans are quite kind and tolerant of religious and cultural diversity as opposed to Great Britain, France, or Germany.
