How come my KCL DVD player sometimes can play VCDs and can't at other times?

Have you tried a lens cleaner?

Do you mean VCDs ? they are Video Compact Discs (as opposed to Digital Video Discs) If you do may be that the quality is just not good enough(scratches, poor quality recording, disc degradation etc. ) Some VCDs will play partly but then freeze or pixellate.
