If the breeder is a responsible one, they take the puppies to the vet when they are just a few days old.
Never do them yourself.

The only legal way is at the vet. If this is an older puppy, they will NOT dock the tail. You'll just have a natural tailed Rott.
Dew Claws can be done at an older age, but the vets don't like to do it.
I would not dock a tail on any dog older than a baby puppy.

It's best done at the vet if you have never done it before. They usually remove them when the healthy puppy is about three days old.If you attempt it yourself and don't know what you're doing, you can cause a lot of bleeding, which could kill a newborn pup. Also,at the vet,the pups will get a checkover to make sure they're strong enough.I know someone who had a newborn cocker pup that wasn't doing very well, but they went ahead and did the tail and dewclaws and the pup died.I'm not saying that removing the tail and dewclaws were the cause of death, but the stress and pain involved to an already weak puppy most probably contributed to it's death. So,it's best to have a vet or experienced breeder do this.

Both procedures should be done within the first 2-3 days after the pup is born. After that it requires actual surgery to do either procedure. Also, to dock a dogs tail later than that usually leaves a bald spot on the end of the tail, a scar.
To do the tail, you have to know which vertebrae you are to dock it at. Every breed with a docked tail has a required spot to do it.
Dew claws can be cut off with sterile nail clippers, scissors, or removed with a hemostat. You should have Kwik Stop on hand or silver nitrate to stop any bleeding. Best to do those claws at 2 days of age.

First how old is the pup? Second: A Licensed vet or the breeder are the only qualified person(s) that should perform this type of procedure, at home docking and removal of the dew claw can result is diseases and improper growth and is EXTEMELY harmful and dangerous to the pup not to mention STUPID. Check with your local Veterinarians to ensure what their policies are on docking and dew claw removal. In the State of Maryland I only know of one who does that procedure. What state are you in?

Take it to the vet. It's usually done by the breeder at about a week of age. They'll usually do it while you wait, they don't typically use any kind of anesthesia and they cut off part of the tail and the dew claws. They might put a stitch in the tail and use some kind of styptic stick on the dewclaws so they don't bleed

I had our puppies dew claws removed. It needs to be done BEFORE they turn 5 days old!!!!
If you love your dog then take him to a vet and have it done. It is not expensive. Call around for a price.

Take the puppy to the vet. However, the tail should have been docked by the breeder's vet as a newborn.

Best to get a professional to do it. Check with the vets in your area to see which vet is the best. You will know that it is being done in a sterile environment. Otherwise you can end up with infections and unexpected expenses besides the tail looking bad and the dog having trouble walking.

It is done by a breeder that is reputable before you buy the dog. That's part of what they are supposed to do. That's why you pay so much for the dog. After 5 - 6 weeks, too late.
