Most 'humane societies' have 'live' cage traps to loan or rent, for controlling feral cats & dogs in neighborhood areas. Some are doubtless large and strong enough to trap coyotes. Once trapped, they are the problem of Animal Control/ Law Enforcement.
If yours doesn't, you could complain to the state health dept., especially if you can provide photographic evidence of the coyotes' presence in the area, along with their feces and other health issues, such as garbage scavenging.

Yes a 40 lb compound bow will kill them if you hit them. I completly understand the Animal Control situation, we had one in the town i live close to, and a few poeple reported it, and they could have cared less until it hurt someone. About the only thing you can do is kill them. A big dog will help keep them away from your property, but it might still go everywhere esle. Coyotes are very intellegent and territorial. They know what is their land and what is not, and if there is a bigger animal on land they know is not theirs, they wont go clsoe to it. My dog has ran off a few yotes in my yard if i didnt get a crack at em with a 12 gauge slug.

If you practice with the compound and you can get a 30 yard shot a good muzzy broadhead would rip a coyote good.
You could put out some baited Conibear traps but you might catch a stray dog in a kill trap.
I prefer seeing my quarry.
if you live in a rural area shoot what you see fit. 12 guage, large bore rifle
Even a 22 rifle and a headshot can drop a coyote.
Coyotes have been known to prey on pets and have heard tails (although rare) of baby theft.
Shoot, don't tell the libs.. If you wait til winter, bait them. they make good fur collars for coats.

Hell yes you can kill them. You need to look into your neighborhood laws. I'm sure if you live in a neighborhood you can't discharge a firearm. Yes a bow will kill them but you might aught to invest in a bow a little heavier. Coyotes run in packs and very seldom attack people. They do carry rabbies. If you have enough hungry ones in a pack, its possible for them to come after you. It would be more possible for them to come after a small child that is alone and playing in the yard. You don't sound like you are that experienced in the outdoors with a firearm or bow. You need to find someone who is. If houses aren't packed together and it was me, I would set out a few turkey decoys and draw them in and then throw a 100 grain broadhead through them from my Mathews. Those coyotes are used to people and probably don't spook very easily allowing you to get close. I wouldn't recommend that but I've been around those critters all my life. Put some chickens in your backyard and they will be coming in your house.... Then you could pop em legally with a gun. I wouldn't recommend that either, bullets don't do drywall very good. You probably should go down to animal control face to face and see if they know anyone or will set some traps. Thats probably your best bet

First I'll point out what NOT to do... as a couple people have chosen to plague you with bad advise. Do Not poison them, as any poison you put out will be available to peoples pets and other desirable wildlife. Don't set leg traps for the same reason. If you're not in city limits and it's legal and safe for you to use a firearm, that would of course be the best solution. If not, you may still be able to use a pellet gun if it is safe to do so. A shot to the brain or heart will kill a coyote. Another person talked about packs of coyotes killing kids. Healthy coyotes don't attack people unless injured, cornered, or both. The live trap would be a good idea if they are desperate enough to enter it. Coyotes are very intelligent, and can be difficult to trap with hidden leg traps.. let alone with a big cage. Here's a link to some pelet guns that can take down a coyote. You need at least 1000 fps or greater and be within 75 yards.

I would recommend the Gamo rifles. And as for being afraid of the coyotes.. don't be. They are deathly afraid of humans and try every means of escape before they even think of biting. And while rabies exists, it's rare. The idea that all coyotes are running around with rabies is crazy, as it's a fatal disease and they'd all be dead.

Not sure of where you live, BUT Chances are, they are there. And if that is the case, I'm sure you can find a hunter / trapper to help solve your problem. But don't expect to get rid of them completely. Isn't going to happen !! As with any weapon, a well placed shot will kill. If you are not experienced with a bow....don't try to shoot one !! You may get lucky and get a good clean shot, But most likely all you will do is injure the animal. Which may or may not kill it.... ALSO, Be sure to check with your state hunting / trapping regulations before considering shooting / trapping any animal.

Coyotes are everywhere, but you don't usually see them. They've been seen in San Francisco and I've seen them in Houston, TX.
Coyotes are survivors that have adapted to living close to Man better than wolves. They will also mate with domestic dogs if given the chance. You must live in a semi-rural area if they are numerous enough to leave feces everywhere and to be seen as frequently as you say.
Coyotes will not normally attack people, even children, but can kill and eat small pets. They are more of a scavenger than a predator but can be pesky especially if running in packs. They also can carry rabies, so animal control should do something about them. In my old hometown (in South Texas) a coyote inflected with rabies came up on a person's front porch and bit his little daughter. Her 8 year old brother got daddy's .22 and shot the coyote dead, saving his little sister. That's how they learned the coyote was rabid. Happy ending, little girl survived but had to take rabies shots (ouch!).
What to do? Well, complain about animal control's lack of action stating that coyotes are disease-carriers and can attack people when sick or starving. Try posting letters in the local newspaper so that your local officials will be 'embarassed' enough to act. They can be trapped and relocated (err, the coyotes--oh but we could do this with politicians!), simply shot, or baited with poisoned bait (but this endangers other animals n children) or shot with tranquilizer gun and destroyed or relocated. I once shot a rabid coyote twice with a .35 Remington; my friend Smitty shot him once with a .30-06 and his son had to finish the coyote off with a head shot with his .357 Magnum (true story).
Finally, yes, a 40 lb. compound bow can kill a coyote. If you just want to run them off replace the arrowhead with a spent .38 casing. This way you won't have to deal with the carcass. They're smart and will move along. That's how they've survived all this time.
Good luck.

It might kill them if you hit a vital spot.
A rifle works better but it may not be safe to shoot it in a neighborhood . Wont your hubby shoot them?
Make sure its season for them some states like NC where I do most of my hunting have no closed season or bag limit so you can shoot them year round. But soem states may have a season set on them

I agree with JZ. getting a decent powered Air rifle will do the trick. however i live in the country where every one has a .22 or something strapped to their 4-wheeler and/or truck. with the mentioning of neighborhood i assume you live in the suburbs out of the city. you can still hunt with a pellet gun out there but let everyone, and i mean EVERYONE, know what you are doing with a "gun". i had the cops called on me more than once about a "Creepy guy with a gun is roaming around the place."
