It is a medical term.. For people who are like 40 or 50 pounds overweight. But usually people will only see people who are like 100 pounds overweight as obese.

It's a medical term. It's much more than just 'fat'. And even doctors generally won't call someone obese in front of them or their visitors.
It's generally used when talking about the problem of obesity - as in, a general thing where many people are too fat, not specific people. It's really never used to describe people - it's a very loaded word and would easily be seen as offensive. If you need to identify an obese person (in a crowd or photograph) it's probably better to call them 'big' or you may cause offense.

Obese is used to describe a person who is over weight by more than 20% of their ideal weight. As in, now that I've had my second child and put on 50 pounds, I am certainly obese!

Personally, I use it almost every week. I'm a nurse in a hospital and when we assess our patients that is one of the terms we can chose to describe a person's abdomen. Normally, I don't usually use it in my everyday vocabulary I just call them big or fat.

Its when your BMI is over 30. But BMI isnt a very good measurment of fat because its just a ratio between hight and weight. You may have very low fat %age but weigh a lot because of high mucsle content.
