No, it's not illegal. Manufacturers are not responsible to make sure you're eating correctly or stop people from eating junk food.

Salt intake—or more precisely, sodium intake—is a controversial topic in health care today. Healthy adults can safely consume 0.2-0.4 ounces (6-11 g) of salt daily, which is equivalent to 0.08-0.14 ounces (2400-4400 mg) of sodium.
While some have suggested that everyone should reduce salt intake, others point out that there is no evidence that salt restriction is of any benefit to otherwise healthy individuals.
A lethal oral dose of sodium (50 percent of the animals tested) was 498 mg/kg body weight in rats and 300 mg/kg body weight in mice.

Well, for some people with heart and/or kidney disease that amount is relatively small. It's up to them to know the potential consequences of eating high sodium foods.
For a healthy person the amount of salt required to do serious damage would render the food inedible.

No...it's not the company's fault that you have no self control. It's everyone's personal responsibility to act responsibly (I can't believe I'm saying this...) when consuming food products.
A truck load of anything will kill you...and lethal levels of sodium vary by person and their medical condition. The average person won't die from eating a whole bag of Lay's...(they'll probably just feel miserable and wish they were dead).
*cheers*

Nope - if it was illegal then they wouldn't sell big canisters of salt. There are no disclaimers on a container of salt that say not to eat it in one sitting. People can die from drinking too much water; it is the consumers responsibility to eat and drink in moderation.

LOL what are you talking about tonight????? I don't think that such a thing is possible in one meal, even if you ate salt cakes.
