G'day all!!

I was wondering, I am considering serving in the Unites States Military, but I have a slight (possible) problem.

I am half Austrian, and half American ( I grew up both in Austria and America, My mom is austrian my dad american) so I not only speak Austrian dialect, german and englisch fluently, I also have citizinship in both countries.

I have heard that, if i were to enter the military, that I would have to renounce my Austrian citizinship. Is that true?

If so, is there no way around it??

and, Would it be possible to, in the future, get it back?

Cheers!

hey sci,

sorry, but your information is outdated. I have already run into that problem, but it has been recently allowed. I have both citizenships and i'm 19, with no need to decide

If you have dual citizinship you will be fine. You will not be able to get a job that requires a secuirty clearance but you can still join. I recently had a Marine that had dual citizinship w/Canada. He is a Sgt and was trying to Lateral Move to my MOS. He had to renounce his Canadian in order to continue.

Also, you can get promoted past SSgt with a dual citizinship. I have no idea what that guy was talking about. I know a 1stSgt with Dual.

No you would not lose your citizenship but you should get a clearance from Austria first. From the U.S. standpoint you do not have to be an American citizen to serve in the U.S. military but you do have to get approval to serve in a foriegn military. I am not sure if Ausria is the same so check ito that, since you have a dual citizenship I do not think it is necessary but be sure first.

technically you can't be both after age 18. The US does not allow dual citizenship. By act of Congress two people in USA History have been granted that. Marquis DeLafayette and Winston Churchill.

So it is decision time no matter what your military aspirations are.

Given the current security climate you better make a hard decision soon before you attempt any international travel.

dual citizenship is allowed.. UNLESS you were to become an Officer or require a Security Clearance. then you'd have to give up the Austrian one.

No,

The US military is full of non-citizens. You cannot get promoted past Staff Sergeant if you are a foreigner. Since you have dull citizenship you will be fine. We had a soldier that had dull US and Canadian citizenship.

I honestly think you would. I have nothing official to prove it though.
