Fear and hate bred of ignorance.

Fear predominantly but ego too.

I have recently met a Christian who says he wants to have serious religious discussions with me (an atheist). I am pretty excited, as is he, he has a Buddhist friend too he wants to invite to the conversations.

He does not seem threatened by the idea of intense debate. He liked the idea of me trying to convert him to atheism as he thinks it will be an interesting challenge - though he says I will not succeed.

I am hoping it really works out. We will see. But, the reason I am so excited is this is so rare. I really want to talk to a real live person who is a strong believer. I want to understand, I want to see how they respond to some arguments.

I also want to see if we can maintain a healthy friendship through this. I am hoping so!

I think the difference here is we both see the fun in this. We do not see it as personal attacks on who we are.

We both (or all) see the opportunity to learn.

Belief in unsubstantiated claims.

These people know, deep inside that they would have to admit to themselves that they don't really know the things they have put so much stock in all of their lives. All their beliefs crumble as they realize their is no foundation to a faith-based belief system.
