Son-in-law decided himself to defer his tour with the Missouri Nat. Guard for 1 year. Can he really do this w/o punishment?

You can go into the ING (Inactive National Guard) for up to one year for personal reasons or 3 years to complete a religious mission (ala mormons). So yes, he can. He does not get credit for that year against his contract though.

You need permission from your commander so you must have a genuine reason such as studies abroad, family hardship, work overseas etc. If your command approves, then you get to not drill for a year but can still be activated with your unit.

uh not really.. not without permission from his Superiors. if they say he goes, he goes, he can't say "it's inconvenient for me to go now."

He'd better have a darn good reason for wanting to be left behind in Rear Det.

He made a commitment - he need to keep his word.
