Exercise, better diet, group therapy, individual therapy, examining the stresses in your life and evaluating if you can change them, doctor visit to see if the problem is physical and not mental, evaluating if you a family history of depression and thinking seriously if medication may be best -

If you want to take a holistic approach, try reading up either on-line or at the library on alternative cures. Some people swear by St John's Wort,5-HTP,SAM-E, adding 'fatty' fish and/or green tea to the diet,or any number of things - including sufficient exercise, yoga, adequate sunlight, and so on.
As to drugs, it all depends on which one works for YOU. Every drug therapy works for some but not for others. You have to try the one your doctor recommends and see if it works for you. Some drug kick in quicker than others, so give it sufficient time.
Currently, I take Celexa - the generic is Citalopram - which is what I take.
Also, if possible, have your physician give you a comprehensive physical. There are many systems in your body that can be mal-
functioning and make you physically stressed in addition to what ever is going on in your world. I wish you all the best....

We all want to be happy, but most of us are trapped by ways of thinking and behaving that seem to keep us perpetually dissatisfied.

Personal power keeps you from being a victim.
4. Leading with your strengths.
When you give in to the automatic fear reaction, it makes you focus on your weaknesses, which only reinforces your fear. But when you take the path of the intellect and spirit, you naturally begin to focus on your strengths--and start to solve your situation. People often think that fixing their weaknesses will save them, but it rarely works. It’s just too painful. Leading with your strengths feels good, and that’s why it works. Simple but true.
5. The power of language and stories.
We don’t describe the world we see--we see the world we describe. Language, as the single most fundamental force of the human intellect, has the power to alter perception. We think in words, and these words have the power to limit us or to set us free; they can frighten us or evoke our courage. Similarly, the stories we tell ourselves about our own lives eventually become our lives. We can tell healthy stories or horror stories. The choice is ours.
6. Multidimensional living.
There are three primary components of life: relationships, health, and purpose (which is usually work). Many people, though, put all their energy into just one area. The most common choice is work, because work best assuages our survival fears of not having enough and not being enough. Other people become obsessed with relationships (because relationship is another word for love), and some people limit their lives in the name of longevity. None of this works. Happiness comes from a full life.

Good psychiatrist doing help through psychotherapy that will remove the bad thoughts and feeling inside. Psychotherapy works wonders in in other lives it might works for you. There are psychiatrist who don't believe in giving medicine to those who don't need it. I was clinically diagnose with depression, and at this moment I am in a process of waning from my medication for depression with my psychiatrist's recommendation. I am now taking only 75mg of Welbutrin every other day until I finish the entire process.

depending on your level of depression there is exersise, meditation, talk therapy, st johns wart along with some other herbal medications that might help. also get out of the house, natural sunlight can do wonders and don't seclude yourself make sure that you talk to friends and family and get plenty of rest with a healthy diet. those are some alternatives to drugs. i do however take meds and personally they work for me but this might work for you. hope this helps

You might want to seek professional counseling. Do you have something against meds.? Don't go untreated!!!! My brother thought he could handle it on his own and he took his own life. Depression is not something to handle on your own. And just having family to talk to isn't enough either. Have you been diagnosed by a dr. Please seek professional help. They will give to alternatives and if you don't like what the first dr. says seek a second opinion.

If you have mild depression, use St. John's Wort. If you have chronic or severe depression, please get treated. There is evidence that it is an organic disease, so you really don't want it to get worse. You wouldn't tell a diabetic to cure himself with willpower would you?

vitamin b, fish oil, multi-vitamin, st worts, exercise, sunlight. talking to people, anything to take your mind off depression do something you enjoy.
