state and federal taxes has been raised 73 times since 2000. when is enough enough? they're using smoking as a well they keep drawing from over and over. to cover what? the expenses incurred were already paid back by "big tobacco". now they're going after the actual smoker, after the manufacturer.

Well they have to keep increasing the taxes because so many people quit. Got to make up the difference somehow!

I was a 3 pack a day smoker. I quit back in 99 (?) when they raised the taxes $1 per pack all at once. Cigarettes were $17 per carton and were going to $27.

That was enough of a jump for me to quit. I still have half of the last carton I bought. I think they might be a little stale by now though.

As a smoker I feel that consistently taxing one group is unfair. If the govt' decided that soda was making a big increase in health costs related to childhood obesity and put a 5 cent per can. bottle. glass, etc tax on soda you would see all kinds of hell raised. I have paid for a stadium that I can not smoke in. I have waited the 15 years for the cuyahoga county sin tax to end, but it has not. When I wrote to my congressman he indicated that it was to keep kids from smoking. Kids are not adults, and it is against the law for them to smoke. So if you want to get kids to quit or not smoke then just enforce that law. If you want to raise taxes to supply cash for some sort of govt giveaway then tax fairly and equitably, not just smokers but everyone.

AND I DID WRITE MY CONGRESSMAN who is not a smoker.

You know, they make laws so that all the people are protected from those without enough sense or caring to stop hurting other people. And in this case, themselves. Stop smoking. Instead of getting mad at the feds, why don't you get mad at the cigarette companies for hooking you and trying to kill you for their profit? ? ?
