This is for a college Photography I class. There are so many models out there I am feeling overwhelmed. Even telling me which ones to stay away from would be helpful. Thank you !

New or used?

New: The Canon EOS Rebel T2 is under $300 and still available new from B&H Photo Video:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/351523-USA/Canon_9427A001_EOS_Rebel_T2_Date.html

Add a lens to that, and you're good to go.

Used: Try for a used Nikon N80 at KEH:
http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/ProductDetail.aspx?groupsku=NA029990414160&brandcategoryname=35MM&Mode=searchproducts&item=10&ActivateTOC2=false&ID=&BC=&BCC=&CC=&CCC=&BCL=&GBC=&GCC=&KW=Nikon%20N80

Cost about $94, and then spend the rest of your money on a really good lens. You can spend about $125 on a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 or for around $200, get a used fantastic zoom lens like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Tokina-28-70mm-f-2-6-2-8-Nikon-AT-X-270AF-Pro-II_W0QQitemZ250161064774QQihZ015QQcategoryZ3343QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

One thing to remember: your lenses are where you need to spend the money.

Look for a Minolta SRT-202 at KEH, B&H, Adorama or on ebay. Get an MC ROKKOR-X 50mm f1.4 lens and you're good to go. If you'd like more versatility, get the Minolta MD 35-70mm f3.5 constant aperture zoom. Avoid the 35-70mm f3.5/4.5 - the f3.5 constant aperture is far superior. The Minolta MD 70-210mm f4 constant aperture zoom is also an incredible performer.

I've owned a Minolta SRT-202 for over 30 years. I had it serviced for the first time this past Feb. I currently own 16 Minolta 35mm film cameras and will be using them long into the future.
