87 octane is all you need.

I just ran 36,000 miles in the last year and a week with 87 octane and there is not a different.

I've tested 3 tanks of 91 octane 3 times in the pass year just to see if I can feel the different at 10,000 , 20,000 , and 30,000 miles.

Answer: No of most people. Yes at higher altitude and engine load is high.

You should use whatever the owner's manual for your country recommends.

The US Owner's Manual is 87 octane ((RON+MON)/2) method, or 91 RON (research octane number method). This is usually referred to in the US as "regular grade."

(If you are at a high altitude (like the Rocky Mountains) and plan on being there for the entire tankful, you could get away with 85 octane, though.)

I do believe that the Prius in Europe is either 93 or 95 RON per their owner's manuals.

Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (E10) is fine, but not methanol.

The 2004-current NHW20 Prius has essentially the same engine as on the 2001-2003 NHW11 Classic Prius. Several Classic Prius owners that have tried higher octane gasoline have gotten check engine lights, usually an "engine misfire" codes. The atkinson/miller cycle engine of the Prius doesn't like the change in detonation times...

Higher octane fuels also have lower BTUs (lower energy content), so unless the engine is designed for it (the Prius' engine isn't) you will see lower MPG using the higher octane fuel.

Reasons to use higher octane fuel:
1. Your owners manual calls for it (not on the Prius)
2. Your engine is knocking (if it is, you should have the dealer look at it!)
3. It's the only way to get low-sulfur fuel in your area (sulfur will slowly poison your catalyst, making emissions worse over time)
4. You like spending extra money on gasoline

Using premium (91) in a Prius has been known to cause engine misfire codes and a resulting check engine light. Using Ethanol (E10) is slightly cleaner burning but will also slightly reduce your fuel mileage, and E85 is a complete no-no. I would just stick with 85/87 depending on altitude or E10 if it is available and you want to use it. Where I live (south-east Iowa) regular is 87, E10 is 89, and premium is 91.

i'm uncertain the place Steve is yet US prevalent 87 octane (ron+mon/2) is the stated gas. if your gas is E10 89 octane that's ok too yet use of top rate (ninety one) has been undemanding to reason the Prius to coach on the MIL for misfire codes. The 2001-2009 Prius 1NZ-FXE engine has a 13:a million actual compression ratio yet through Atkinson/Miller cycle intake valve timing the powerful compression ratio is low sufficient that 87 is basically positive mutually as the expansion ratio remains at 13:a million which improves the gas performance of the engine.

A fine quality vehicle which saves you money on fuel, deserves a fine quality fuel. In Europe we have unleaded 95, 98 and 100 octane fuel. I use 95.
