Because 'rich kids' have this pompous, arrogant attitude that they're 'better' than some 'grunt' lying in a muddy rat hole in Iraq risking their life so other 'rich kids' can be free to do whatever the hell they want. -RKO- 09/06/07

I call the BS flag on this one. Dont be mad at people cause there wealthy. Look at Sgt. Tillman, who was wealthy and also turned down a multi million dollar contract playing pro footbal to serve in special forces. As you hopefully know he was killed in afghanistan by friendly fire. And to also point out, he has a college degree and instead of being an officer, he wanted to be enlisted and be on the front lines with the green berets.

So even though you think rich kids dont serve, they do maybe not in the proportion of poor kids, because impovershied people actually join the military for money and money for a college education. If you took those two things away than those poor kids would not serve

I believe a lot of people with wealth are so, because they are hard working.

I also believe that people, whether rich or poor will do almost anything to keep their kids out of military service. If this means spending $100,000 to keep them in college, they will do it, especially the wealthy.

People from more modest means don't feel they have this option, so their kids go off to join the military.

There are exceptions to both sides of this coin. Pat Tillman was an excellent example of a guy who turned down multi-million dollar football contracts to go off and fight, because he believed it to be his duty.

Today, we have a better crop of soldiers and Marines than we've ever had on active duty. Some would say it's because it's all volunteer. The fact is, most of the grunts we have in service today are no different than the grunts of fifty years ago.

We may have a larger selection of college level enlisted personnel today, and this certainly raises the intellectual level of the average grunt, but it probably does not improve the operating skills of these people, under combat conditions. Instincts, raw courage, and killing ability is not taught in any university of which I'm aware.

I'm what most people would consider a "rich kid". I go to a private high school and tuition is $20,000 a year, where just around the corner there's a public school that's almost as good for exactly $00,000. When I'm through with that I'm going to college, probobly one of the expensive ones too. However, as I'm writing this, I'm sweaty from the three miles I ran earlier, 100 sit ups, 20 pull ups, and 60 push ups I just completed. I'm working hard to join the Marines, granted, as an officer through NROTC, not enlisting, but still, the Marines as an infantry officer. And I still have two and a half hours of homework to do so that my grades will be high enough that the NROTC will accept me. I may be extremely priveleged, but I still love my country and would gladly lay down my life for her. So please, don't make generalizations like this one about "rich kids". I've got a lot of friends who are self centered and who don't care about our country, but there's a lot of us just like me who do care.

Hard working honest people know the economy sucks. That the job stability of the past is gone. Lay-offs and buy-outs and downsizing has taken care of the middle class. Where can you go with benefits and retire (sometimes at the age of 37) after 20 years? Unions take their dues and say see you later. There goes more of your hard working pennies.
Guaranteed pay raises by the year. Medical for free. Housing benefits. Retirement (forget social security). and a chance to see the world and be proud and make everyone proud of you.

'Rich kids' - especially those with policical ambitions, like the young John Kerry in Vietnam - do join the military. They tend to do so after college, as officers, but they still do so. You could accurately observe that there are many more working-class than rich in the army, but then, there are many more working class than rich, period.

I disagree to some extent. True more poor people are in the military. This is because the military is seen as/advertises itself as a method of social mobility. This is through using the GI Bill as a way for paying for education, becoming a career military officer, or a step into politics/defense contracting, also travel/adventure is something people look for.

I do know "rich" kids who have joined/are in the military. And most rich kids do love their country, same as "poor" kids.

The real people you ought to be questioning is why the "rich" kids of the Vietnam generation got draft deferrments and then 30 years later pretended they were "tough on national security" and "pro-military" these people are also known as Chicken Hawks, see Cheney and Bush front and center.

When you join the army the thought of death becomes very real. For people who have had everything given to them by people, it s easy to see people as the only powers that be, and when your fighting the only power you know it's hard to think you stand a chance. You need faith. Faith comes from adversity and adversity is something working people know all too well.

Asked and answered- hard working honest people do.

That is perfectly acceptable to those of us who served or are serving. It requires commitment to a team to succeed and we achieve that rather well in comparison to the rest of the world.

Most people who join the service do so to get training in a particular field..... Or to be eligible for GI Bill to help pay for a college education.

While a rich kid's parents have the money to help them get their education.

You really cant over generalize like that. The Military is one of the most diverse organizations in this country. Trust me, there is a little bit of everything to go around! Thank God for them, too!
