I know the very basics about the major wars, other history topics and other subjects generally taught in high school which I've been out of for quite a few years :) Though I was wondering if anyone who considers themselves to be 'book smart' could give me a run down of topics that can help a person to be a more literate and well-rounded individual. Thank you so much!

Sure do philosophy. Get all the nobel laureates and check out their works. Read whatever you like they've put out.

Reading literature will give you a feeling of the times literature probes. Again read the nobel winners and all other prize winning writers. Make out lists of what you'd like to read and put them on a yearly time table. Plan a year at a time initially.

Politics gives you a feel of how those who want to guide the destiny of their nations think and act. War is something they all have to keep uppermost in their minds. See how they cope with that.

Go bak to creation and dispersal of humans 80,000 years ago out of AFrica (Stephen Oppenheimer). Get a feel of Hawkins and that bunch.

Get a feel of music that congeals time into capsules of pure sound. It gives the brain sound to globally attach knowledge to.

let the newspaper be your guide, how it has many different sections. if you can read on the different subjects instead of concentrating on only selected fields, then, you'll have over all knowledge.
