First, get an antibiotic to reduce the infection before any work is done. An infected tooth can cancel or reduce the effect of the anesthetic and you won't get numb and this is where horror stories come from. Then if you want it pulled everything should be fairly easy after this. They just numb you and pull it and it might be slightly sore afterward. Rinsing gently with salt water helps keep it clean and heal. But, no spitting, straws, smoking/tobacco usage, carbonated beverages for two days or at least the first 24 hours. If it is a molar tooth it could turn into a surgical extraction if it is broken or breaks during the extraction in which case you might need a day off to rest b/c it would be a little sorer than usual. Have some soup or mashed potatoes to eat for the day of the extraction

Pulling the tooth should be a last resort. I am getting over an absessed tooth right now. My Dentist has me on an antibiotic. It has taken away the pain and the swelling is practically gone. I won't lose the tooth and consequently wont have to have a bridge placed.

You should be on antibiotics before you get the tooth pulled. Or the antibiotics could clear the infection altogether and save the tooth.

Check with the dentist to see if there is any alternative to this.
If it's a baby tooth, get it done because an adult one will take its place.

get it pulled because infection can get worster and if lingers (the infection), it can go into your blood system or cause other serious health problems.
