LDS, don't you wish there were wards where you could just show up on Sundays wearing casual attire. One of the main reasons I stopped going was I felt incredibly uncomfortable. I would feel even more uncomfortable being the only person dressed casually. Is there any references in the scriptures that require you to dress as such?

lol, I was not doing anything bad. Why would you think that? I just don't feel comfortable all dressed up, there are a lot of people like that.

Why would you not want to wear your best in God's house? Makes no sense whatsoever!

I've seen many attend church wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes, sometimes with a button-up shirt and sometimes with a T-shirt. Certainly, if you were the only one attending church in casual attire, and everyone else was dressed up nice, it's natural to feel uncomfortable. The same would be true if you attended a church where you were the only one wearing a suit but everyone else dressed casually. There are no scriptural references suggesting how you should dress for church, but there is a general attitude shared by most members of the church that you should wear your "Sunday best" to church meetings, out of respect for the Lord. For some, this would include a shirt and tie, but for others their Sunday best may just be a T-shirt and jeans that are clean and unwrinkled. If you feel uncomfortable, perhaps it is because you can afford to get some nicer clothes but are unwilling to do so. Or perhaps it is because you prefer to always dress comfortably, even if it means being uncomfortable emotionally. Due to the nature of my job, I frequently find myself wearing slacks and a nice shirt 6-7 days a week, so I guess I'm just used to it. When I was younger, however, I hated dressing up for church and would change out of my clothes the minute I got home! I wouldn't let that stop you from going to church, though. There is so much spiritual nourishment to be gained at church, and I'm sure the Lord would rather have you there in your pajamas than sitting on the couch at home.

The collar, suit and tie are uncomfortable some times, but I tolerate it because I know the occasion is very important.

That same collar, suit and tie are just as uncomfortable at work meetings and friends weddings, but those occasions are likewise very important so I put up with it.

I don't think you'd disrespect your friend by showing up to a special function of theirs in casual wear, why should you to it Heavenly Father?

On an interesting note, it really isn't the church's fault that our society has multiple modes of dress that carry different significance. If the western culture didn't have "formal wear, sports wear, casual wear, casual friday wear, etc" and simply had "clothes" then this wouldn't be an issue because all your clothes would be your "Sunday best".

I think there are a number of good reasons for dressing up to attend church.

1. If you dress up for a job interview, shouldn't you at least show the same respect for God as you would a potential empolyer.

2. It helps me feel more prepared to worship. If I just rolled out of bed, threw on some clothes and went to church, I wouldn't be in the right frame of mind.

3. It helps keep my mind on worship when I'm not paying attention to what others are wearing, so I try to offer the same courtesy to them.

You can come to my ward dressed anyway you want. You may not be comfortable because most will wear church attire.

I went to a Lutheran service last summer and everyone was wearing shorts and sneakers except us. I didn't let it bother me. I had the same attitude toward the Lord as I would have at my home home ward.

It's kind of a respect thing. The church is the house of the lord and I think it's only right that we look our best when we go to his house.

I don't mind dressing up for church. I don't go there to relax, I go there to learn and to worship. Dressing up for 3 hours a week isn't certainly isn't going to kill me. The other 165 hours I can relax and dress how I want.

Yes and No.

Yes, because I have a 5-month old that keeps me busy, and I barely have time to make myself look decent and presentable to go out in public, much less church on Sundays.

No, because.. imagine if people would be allowed to wear jeans and a shirt... pretty soon they'd be wearing their fuzzy slippers and tank tops.

I think it's about being respectful to the Lord and his meetinghouses. It's only once a week for a couple hours. I just deal with it.

But just so you know... they are not going to kick you out if you wear jeans and a shirt. "Some" Latter-day Saints understand that investigators don't know what is appropriate to wear, or that members may not be able to afford nice Sunday clothes.

You know, sometimes, with three kids and a husband to get ready, I think about this very subject. But then I remember that the reason I am "dressing up" is to show my Savior and Heavenly Father respect.

I do feel a different spirit about myself when I take the time to look a little nicer than on a normal day. (which is pretty easy to do, looking nicer, when I take care of three kids all day!)

You get the point, right?

I like dressing up -- it shows respect to God

That really just my personal preference -- sorry it's a sore point for you.

the point of dressing up for church is to be respectful. But you can show up in casual clothes if you want to, they're not exactly going to kick you out
