You have to check and see if the purchase is legal in both states, then only long guns can be bought in another states from the one in which you reside.
GCA1968
(b) It shall be unlawful for any licensed importer, licensed manufacturer, licensed dealer, or licensed collector to sell or deliver --
(3) any firearm to any person who the licensee knows or has reasonable cause to believe does not reside in (or if the person is a corporation or other business entity, does not maintain a place of business in) the State in which the licensee's place of business is located, except that this paragraph (A) shall not apply to the sale or delivery of any rifle or shotgun to a resident of a State other than a State in which the licensee's place of business is located if the transferee meets in person with the transferor to accomplish the transfer, and the sale, delivery, and receipt fully comply with the legal conditions of sale in both such States (and any licensed manufacturer, importer or dealer shall be presumed, for purposes of this subparagraph, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, to have had actual knowledge of the State laws and published ordinances of both States), and (B) shall not apply to the loan or rental of a firearm to any person for temporary use for lawful sporting purposes;
This means, for example, that you will have to get a Massachusetts Firearm ID card.

my friend was up here in Oregon from California and was unable to buy a gun. I would call a gun dealer before I drove across state line

If you are buying a Curio and Relic gun, you can buy it out of State. But for other guns, especially handguns, I am pretty sure you have to be a resident of that State.

I am not sure about long guns but handguns cannot be sold out of state. If it is a handgun, it is a no-no. If it is a long arm, check with both state laws. The PD will know.

You could possibly buy it but NH does not recgonize MA licences. So it might be illegal to carry in that state. Info found at http://www.ccrkba.org/reciprocity.html
Info may be incorrect, it's from 1996. I am also under the impression that you have to fill out a form at your local police station to bring a new weapon into your home state. This is found info so it may be wrong I am not 100% sure.

You can buy the gun there, but you will have to have the FFLdealer there send it to a dealer where you live, and transfer the gun to you from there.
