if they were NOT perfect, then why did god make something imperfect?

if they WERE perfect however, then why did they sin by eating the apple? (please don't answer with "freewill". it's entirely possible to have freewill and still not sin. for example, god has freewill and doesn't sin, right? so even though adam and eve had freewill, that still doesn't explain why they sinned if they were perfect. what other reason is there then for why someone perfect would have sinned?)

~LizzieSpinelli (AKA:

you're calling adam and even stupid. so then they must not be perfect (since there's nothing perfect about stupidity). so then the question becomes, "why did god make something as imperfect as stupid people?" -- i thought he was some amazing designer, and yet his crowning achievement was two stupid people who lived in a garden???

you need to learn how to read things in their ENTIRETY. i already explained above why the "freewill" answer just doesn't cut it.

"Hey, Ray":

so then, according to you, god is not omnipotent. you said that he can not sin and also that it is impossible to create something perfect. so if you want to play that card, then that's fine., it does away with this one contradiction. but just so you know, your idea of god is one that is not all-powerful.

Uncle Remus 53,

you're missing the point. you're saying that man was initially perfect, and didn't become imperfect until AFTER he ate from the tree. but obviously man must've been imperfect BEFORE he ate from the tree, otherwise he wouldn't have eaten from the tree because that's a very imperfect thing to do. you follow?

C. L. Richardson,

obviously, if someone is prefect then they're going to have the CAPABILITY to sin because someone who's prefect has the capability to do ANYTHING.

but just because they have the capability to sin doesn't mean that they WILL sin. so the question still stands., whether they had the capability to sin or not, why would someone perfect ever actually sin?

Sal D,

well, no, it's not the only possible answer. another answer is that there's just no such thing as god or adam and eve. that explanation resolves the dilemma quite nicely actually.

TimeLord,

how can a creator call himself perfect if his creation is imperfect?

God designed Adam and Eve to be perfect, which is to say, in his own image. Perfection includes free will. God wanted Adam and Eve to love him voluntarily, with free will, and not as his pet humans.

After Adam and Eve chose to sin, they were no longer perfect. When you have free will, you make choices, and Adam and Eve made a bad choice in rejecting God's directive about what they could eat. The tree of life turned out to be the most poisonous substance ever ingested because it not only ruined Adam and Eve's happiness in paradise, but it affected all their descendants--including us.

Cheers,
Bruce

In the beginning Adam and Eve were perfect, what made them perfect was the fact that they didn't know what sin was. Just like a baby born today, as it grows up it will not be held accountable to God until they reach a mature age were they know right from wrong and can make that decision on their own. The old devil new this and tempted them with the only thing in the Garden that we know off that would cause God to get mad at them. What the old devil didn't realize was that God knows everything and he already new what man was going to do so he plans for Jesus coming to earth in the form of a servant where already in the works from Genesis on. The old devil was defeated at calvery. So I say yes, Adam and Eve were Perfect, they had no consciousness of sin or what is was.

Good question. Adam and Eve were not perfect in the sense that they did not have the capacity to sin. Only God is that kind of perfect. But they were sinless until they sinned. If God hadn't made them with the capacity to turn away from him, then their love for him would have been imperfect because it would have been forced...not given freely.

Edit: No, God is perfect and he is incapable of sin. That's not a contradiction. Sin is by nature imperfect.

a perfect Creator can create anything-perfect or imperfect. Why would you assume He couldn't or wouldn't create something imperfect? What is your definition of perfect, anyway? Do you know what God's definition of perfect is???? The fact is: Satan rebelled against God and that is what brought imperfection to this world. You really must read the Bible to get the correct and accurate details. It cannot be summed up in one or two sentences . I'm sorry to inform you that free will does make us vulnerable to sin. It's not my explanation, it is GOD'S.

We were stitched up like kippers (as they say). God obviously needed a more interesting plot than "Adam and Eve lived in the garden and were happy forever and ever, Amen". So, he had to toss in a tree and a snake and whatever else was necessary for a good story.

(Hint: You will never get an answer to this question that makes sense, because nothing in religion makes any sense).

'Me': Perfect people obviously wouldn't be tempted, since being tempted would be imperfect.

BEST ANSWER EVER______ I PROMISE

Adam was perfect when god created him and Eve was created from Adam. Both were told not to eat the forbidden fruit (no where in the bible does it say apple) or one day they would surely die. Eve was tempted by satan with the promise that if she ate the fruit she would have more wisdom than god. (Yes perfect beings can be tempted. The bible said that Jesus was tempted by a woman at a well. He however chose not to sin) Eve (unlike Jesus) chose to partake in the fruit and when she found it to be good she approached her husband and offered it to him. He at first asked "Foolish woman what have you done." She said the serpent told her to eat and it was good. Adam knew that she disobeyed God and would surely die. He then chose to eat the fruit also. (Maybe out of curiosity, maybe because he didnt want to live forever without eve) Either way choices were made and I know you said not to argue free will, but that is what it boils down to. Jesus chose not to and Adam and Eve made the opposite choice

Hi, Toby. Some good questions here. God can and does create perfect beings and he also creates beings who must attain their perfection through gradual, spiritual evolutionary steps. The beings created in perfection are often envious of us who have to experientially earn our perfection through many long series of progressive spiritual attainment.

Adam and Eve didn't exactly "sin." They were found guilty of a serious "error in judgment" but their hearts were NOT turned away from God nor were they found guilty of open rebellion (like Lucifer was) against the Paradise Plan.

For more about this fascinating story and this amazing couple, I highly recommend the book Adam and Eve - A Tragic Love Story. This is a serious and scholarly work and I think you'd enjoy it. Good luck!

I really don't know how serious you are with your question since a lot of questions in Y&A don't seem to be.

An answer to part of your unanswered question is that God is holy by nature and therefore cannot sin. Therefore God is God all by Himself and beside Him there is no equal.

God created man perfect in the beginning. There was no imperfection in him at that time. It was when man choose to disobey God's direct command not to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil that the perfect man and woman became imperfect. That was when they became sinners or seperated from a rightful relationship with God.

guess you forgot to put Satan into the equation. he was a very powerful creature. almost as powerful as God himself. Adam and Eve were created in God's image meaning perfect. Satan's temptation has pr oven just how powerful evil is. They were given a choice much like we are today. God knew how powerful Satan was. God,being perfect, would not make His greatest creation imperfect. He loved them so He gave them freedom of choice. Satan has been trying to turn people against God from the beginning of time. Read up on how powerful Satan really was. may answer your questions on how perfect things really were. Temptation is the key here. to choose to go against God was a rotten choice but a choice given to them none the less. God and Satan. the ultimate good and evil. one as powerful as the other. too bad man lost that one to the devil!!

Adam and Eve were perfect until satan and the apple. God gave them the Garden of Eden along with some rules to follow. Satan tempted them by lying to them about God. They chose not to follow the rules and were punished as a result. You see, God follows through on what He says. Sin was introduced to humanity along with satan.

Man is not God, therefore man will sin. Free will gives man the chance not to sin, not a guarantee against sin. God is the creator and has no need for free will. We, on the other hand, need to realize that we can not call His bluff, like our mortal parents, etc...

Hope this helps.
