It is NOT commonly called a game so don't listen to whoever said that. Only people who don't play much call it that.

Easiest way to describe it is, if there are many teams or individuals competing, it is a tournament. If there are only a few teams or individuals competing, it's a match.

It might be a good idea to start with the local state golf association. Since you asked a question like you would use a shotgun did you expect a positive response ? Not everything is done through a website or on the internet. You have to localize the territory you want covered.

It depends on the type of competition it is. Overall, they're called tournaments. Depending on the kind of tournament, it could be stroke play or match play. Match play can be 1 on 1 or 2 on 2. Stroke play is determined by who has the lowest score(number of strokes) over or under par. Par can be anywhere from 70 to 73 strokes.)

If there are 2-6 or so teams we call it a match.
If there are 10+ teams we call it a tournament.
In a match there are usually no medals or trophies. In a tournament there are usually medals for individuals and a trophy or two for the top teams.

Usually it is called a game. A match would usually be for match play (just two players that compete by the hole)

Although common people may call it a game, a game in golf is called a HOLE.

This is a quote from the wikipedia:
"A hole of golf consists of hitting a ball from a tee on the teeing box ... , and once the ball comes to rest, striking it again. This process is repeated until the ball is in the cup."

Further information of Golf can be see in the Wikipedia link below this.

If it's a player vs. another player, it's a match.

If all players are playing against all other players, it's a tournament.
