Think Prom.. with better taste. Long formal gowns, nothing cut too high or plunging too low. tasteful colors, hair and makeup. Chadwicks actually has some nice ones that would be appropriate and aren't too expensive. Any Formal section at any fine department store like Macy;s and Nordstrom's too.

It will most likely be your first and last time to go to a military ball! I am an Army wife and I think they stink! Mostly single soldiers attend aside from all the officers and NCO's. Trust me it's like an FRG meeting tenfold!!!! What's worse you have to meet some co-workers face to face and some of them are buttheads (but not all).

But if you must go, then wear a formal dress. I would make it a conservative one, nothing with too much cleavage or too high in the slit. I would get a long black/dark colored dress and not show too much leg either. A lot of soldiers will be 'eyeing' you. So just wear a straight cut formal with maybe a wrap around the shoulders. Wear comfortable shoes for the dance part. Put your hair up maybe with some hair accents. Don't go to too much trouble with cosmetics just enough to make a nice picture in... they take pictures.

Another tip, when you have your picture made together don't let the photgraphers put you in a less flattering pose. Ask them to take it with you standing at an angle to his side. It will look good this way but don't do the pose where you face one another holding hands, it looks so high school and makes hour glass figures look chunky when their not.

A ball is a formal event. You will see all types of attire, however, there actually are proper ettiquette regulations regarding this. Your dress should be a gown-- below the knee, preferably floor length. You want to look nice and presentable. You certainly don't want your junk hanging out as you go through the receiving line to meet his Chain of Command and their wives. Think simple and elegant, as you don't want to clash with his uniform. Department stores all carry the type of gown you are looking for. Most women will also have their hair and nails done. Have fun!

The main thing is to have fun..imagine you are at a formal wedding and you are sitting next to your great-aunt..LOL It can be fun..its what you make of it. You get to dress up in a formal (floor length and tasteful), your man looks great in his dress and you get to hear some pretty funny stories sometimes. Yes you have to go through the receiving line, yes you might have some rubber chicken for dinner, yes you will have those wives checking everyone out and gossiping. Aren't those women everywhere though?? I really hate it when they are referred as those FRG ladies..please..we aren't all like that. Anyway dress up, have fun and go with an open mind. If you carry in negativity like the other answer you got..you will absolutely not have any fun..Go with the flow..
My husband is a senior NCO and we have to attend but we probably would go anyway. I mean how often do you really get to dress up and see him in his dress uniform. To me that's the best part of it all..Calvary stetson and all...
Good luck and have fun..
Proud Army Wife!! HOOAH!!
