The golf ball has changed significantly over the years. The original balls were made of wood, then came golf balls made from leather and full of goose feathers, then the gutta percha ball came, then wound rubber golf balls became popular. Wound core balls were the standard for a while until solid core balls were introduced. They are generally made of rubber or some other rubber-like composite. Now golf balls come in cores of varying sizes, some have mantle layers, and cores that are firm on the outside and get progressively softer on the inside.
