I'm sorry,... for saying this,....

Duh?!?!?

They are all ripe, they are not picked at their prime ripeness to be sold at the market, if they are not ripe.

Its a matter of variety, certain types are indeed sweeter or has a lot more seeds. Even seed-less watermellon have little things that might of been seeds, given more time to mature.

But certain factors affect what makes a watermellon ripe.
Like if its a deep green, well some varieties are stripped - not a solid green.
Even in Japan, where they actually have square watermellons.

Just trust your grocer, and enjoy them while you can. Coz you can't get a good watermellon in the middle of winter,... unless you turn them into juice and freeze it for later when you do get a hankering for watermellon - in the middle of winter.

cheers babe!!!

Usually, ALL the melons in a grocery store are ripe. The men that pick them, (out in the field), know what they are doing, and they only pick the ripe ones.
If by some chance, the melon you buy is not ripe, then take the whole melon back to the store, and they will give you another one, for free.
You can look at the stem on the melon, and if it is dry, brown and curled up, it is ripe.

1. Thump it. If the watermelon sounds hollow, it's ripe. This is difficult for less-gifted ears.

2. Look at the color on the top. The watermelon is ripe when there is little contrast between the stripes.

3. Look at the color on the bottom. A green watermelon will have a white bottom; a ripe melon will have a cream- or yellow-colored bottom.

4. Press on it. If the watermelon sounds like it gives a little, it's ripe.

I thump it & if it sounds like drum filled w/ water it's juicy. It should also feel heavy for it's size.

For ripeness, I look at the pale spot to see if it's creamy or yellowish.

I prefer watermelons w/ a smooth, firm rind over one that gives a bit because I'd rather have a crunchy melon than a riper one that's mushy.

An old southern wives tale, is to thump it and listen for a hollow sound, which I'm told ensures sweetness and ripeness.

The best way to tell is by the color of the stem. If it is green the melon is green or not ripe enough to eat. If it is brown it is probably ripe.

I go by color...its seems like the darker the green on the outside the better tasting on the outside... I do "thump" or "squeeze" my fruit..I think its abusive.
