My dog is about 3 years old. He recently (about 2 months ago) started barking ALL the time. Every little noise, every car door that is shut on the whole block. We have people on our block that come in at all hours of the night. He's barking and keeping us awake. I dont want to do the shock collar thing, he's a small dog, only 13 pounds. I got on petco.com and they have a thing that emits a high pitched tone that only dogs can hear, and supposidly stops them. Anyone use this or have any ideas?

Help!!!!!!! Please!!!!!!

Thanks!

XOXOXO
~Amanda

He is a small dog, and gets PLENTY of exercise!!! I have a 4 y/o that plays with him ALOT! Its mainly at night, when he knows it is supposed to be quiet

I understand your frustration, and I hope this information helps:

Playing with a child is not sufficient exercise for a dog of ANY size, nor is running around in the backyard, or chasing a stick...they need walks. With a dog that small, you may be able to get away with one 20-minute walk a day...why not start there, and add to it if it doesn't get better? If you can walk him right before bed, all the better.

If you decide to use a collar, try the citronella one first, they are the most successful, in my experience.

Don't yell at the dog when he barks, it only reinforces the behavior, and lets him know that he has your attention...it sounds to me like he is trying to "guard" his house...if you let him know that his tactics are working, they will continue.

If all else fails, contact an animal behaviorist, or if one is not available, a dog trainer...they will be able to offer in-depth advice on how to deal with the dog.

Get a metal can of some kind and fill it with coins. Whent the dog barks, shake it vigorously and say "no!" The unpleasant sound coupled with your disapproval will teach him not to bark. If that doesn't work, some type of "shock" collar might be best. You can set shock collars according to weight. Little dogs need to be reprimmanded too for bad behavior.

Your dog is barking becuase he's frustrated. He needs to get out his excess enegy, which I am sure he has being a small breed. (They're lively aren't they?)

The biggest thing you could do to help is- take him for walks every day! Stimulate his mind!

That what a responsible pet owner would do.

Lot's of long walks helped my dog and when he does start barking we have a small squirt gun filled with water and one squirt does the trick.

Have him checked by vet - if this behavior has developed quickly then it could have a physical reason.
Then get the Citrus Spray collar.
