PLC's (Programmable Logic Controller) are most commonly programmed using Ladder Logic Diagrams. Ladder Logic is a graphic means of writting a program which resembles an electrical Ladder diagram.

It is best to start by understanding how to read an electrical schematic and becomming familiar with symbols for normally open and normally closed switches and coils. A simple Ladder Logic diagram should also be easy to hard wire using physical components. So start by looking at simple schematics such as a differential pump control and see how its wired.

You can try using a windows simulator but to be honest the best way is to purchase a small PLC and practice on the real thing. There are very small Nano/ Micro PLC's availabe from several manufacturers such as Keyance or GE-Fanuc which range in price from $125 to $350.

Programming software for a specific brand of PLC is necessary to create a program. Some brands provide a free program for use on low end models, some charge $$ for the software from $100 on up to thousands.

Allen bradley provides a free version for there low end model but their hardware is expensive. AB is also the most widely used PLC and the sofware also has a simulator.

GE-Fanuc sells starter kits for about $350 which include everthing you need.(Software, cables, micro PLC and even a small operator interface)

Keyance probably has the smallest and cheapest PLC @ $125 for a KV-16 but the software costs $100.

You can also find PLC's available on Ebay. Search for Nano PLC or Micro PLC

Depends on what method you want to learn. Originally PLC's were programmed in ladder logic, a system developed to be understood by electrical engineers as it mimicked the relay type drawings they were used to. More recently PLC's may be programmed in higher level languages. The basic ladder function sets are available in the manufacturers manuals, most of which can be downloaded off the Internet. Take a look at Allen Bradley, Siemens, GE, Mitsubishi etc
