i know WHY they make jesus look white in paintings, but why does it CONTINUE TODAY? it reeks of ignorance

because theoretically if you create god in your own image, thats okay since no one knows what he looks like AT ALL, but with jesus, theyve made estimations and he was brown, i just have a hard time believing a lot of these southern baptist type people would have a good time praising a tanned jesus with a big nose

You're right. No doubt Jesus looked like your run-of-the-mill Middle Easterner. I'm sure that would be a shock to some who like to condemn all peoples who "look" like a potential terrorists. But ya gotta love the irony of it.

Everyone knows Jesus was middle eastern.

He isn't always portrayed as a white man, and did you see The Nativity Story? I haven't yet, but in the trailers, it looked as if the actors playing Jesus earthly parents looked middle eastern, with tan skin and black hair.

Every Southern Baptist type I know of knows that the Lord was a Jew. They know that his complexion was likely dark like a middle easterner. But none of the ones I know paint the paintings, or cast the movies. *shrug* I do know plenty who have bumper stickers on their cars which say "My boss is a Jewish carpenter." Lilly white, 'southern baptist types'.

Also, there are people of middle eastern and jewish descent in my church's mostly white congregation here in east Texas, and they are loved for who they are.

I find it quite odd that so many people should still be so ignorant about what us southern baptist type people are really like today. If you are ever in tyler, tx., then please accept my invitation to friendly baptist church. I am also associated with landmark baptist church. You will be more than welcome at both. Perhaps we can both learn from each other.

Be well.

Look. Jesus was a native of Judah and was a Hebrew. Since that is located in the Middle East, of course he was middle eastern. It's no surprise and it makes no difference to true believers.

The reason that the art looks as it does is that it was painted by people in Europe so Jesus looks European. If it were painted by a person in Nigeria maybe he would paint Jesus looking Nigerian. What difference does it make? None.

Man has always created God in his image, then tries to claim it's the other way around.

As Christianity moved west through Europe, the artists' depictions showed him with lighter and lighter skin, hair and eyes.
I've seen paintings of Jesus with blue eyes and blond hair, LOL.

I have always known that Jesus was a Jewish boy from Israel. That has not stopped my belief in him as my savior.

The artist doing the paintings were just using hired models that lived in their area.

Most important thing is not his race or color but that he was the son of God the messiah. People color him as they please to place a label on him as being white but we all know better, it shows that as mature grown ups some still have a great fantasy life.

That's the weird thing about Christians...They SAY they worship God, practice worshipping Jesus, and pick and choose what they want to believe in whenever it suits them...even when it contradicts what they said previous. (like "you need Jesus because the All-Knowing can't seem to know ahead of your life what you are as He creates you")
