Easiest way to find a dog your kids will love too, is to go to the shelter and see what they have. Watch each dog's reaction to your children, and choose the one who loves them as much as you do. And you can feel good about saving a life too!

I have 4 children aged 2-14, we had a Golden Retriever, he was the most beautiful, gentle, loving and loyal dog we've ever had.Sadly he died last year (aged 13 years.) They are a lot of work, grooming, walking etc but well worth all the effort you put in. They also love to just sit with you and do nothing but soak up the beautiful sunshine. I highly recommend a dog like this, or a Lab would be just as lovely. Good luck with your choice and enjoy what ever dog you decide to get.

We have three kids, now 14, 11 and 9, and have had two dogs. A stafford cross that was put down at over 15 last year from cancer and a pure bred staffordshire bull terrier pup now 9 months. I really believe that a well trained stafford is one of the best family dogs you can get - large enough to play rough and tumble and small enough to transport easily.

Good luck with your search.

I personally think the best breed of dog for kids are mixes. They are hardier and less likely to have genetics problems. My dog is a Rotti/Shep mix and is the sweetest dog I have ever met and most people say that about him! Labs or lab mixes are good, shepherd mixes, but you should really go to your local animal shelter and find a dog that the shelter recomends is good w/ kids like your local SPCA, they are great.

Go for the "Nanny Dog", an American Pitbull Terrier. They love everyone, especially children. The first time my daughter came to visit with my month old grandson she sat him on the floor in his carrier, the Pit came over to sniff him out then laid down on the floor next to him for the next hour, she would not leave his side. Now that the baby is a year old, when she comes over the Pit will go and put her head in his hand so he can play with her ears. She licks his toes.

i would say a golden retriever...they are known for a very friendly personality. They learn quickly, are good watch dogs, are laid back and they give you their heart. The downside is their hair..which can get hard to take care of...oh but also remember..even though they are known for that every dog has their own personality....she when choosing...pick the calmer one instead on the one that jumps aorund ;)

Labrodors, I have heard, are nice towards children along with Golden Retrivers. I also may suggest the gentle giant, the Saint Brenard.
Also, two Irish Wolfhounds that live near my uncle's house are very gentle and playful, never bark, and were totally friendly to my cousin (who giggled and patted their fur, which they liked), who was 4 years old at the time.

Well the best breed period is the Puggle... (completly safe for children and other pets. Has next to no health problems ) but since you want a big dog... try a mastif. They are the best. They only look scary but the worse thing about them is their drool. They are very friendly. Loves all children and pets. Very easy to train....

i hope that helps.

Great Danes are very nice dogs, laid back, but very large and prone to lots of health/temperament problems. If you consider a dane, get a well bred one and you will be extremely pleased.
