Hi
Cats can live past 20 years.
As far as nutrtion goes, you have it wrong. Take it from someone who adopts diabetic cats and works with others including cats with kidney disease
Nutrition since there are so many bad things out there is very important to your cat’s health
Contrary to what you may have heard, dry foods are not a great thing to feed a cat.
Dry foods are the number 1 cause of diabetes in cats as well as being a huge contributing factor to kidney disease, obesity, crystals, u.t.i’s and a host of other problems. The problems with it are that they are loaded with carbohydrates which many cats (carnivores) cannot process. Most of the moisture a cat needs is gotten
out of the food and 95% of it is zapped out of dry foods in the processing. Also, most use horrible ingredients and don't use a muscle meat as the primary ingredient and use vegetable based protein versus animal. Not good for an animal that has to eat meat to survive.
You want to pick a canned food w/o gravy (gravy=carbs) that uses a muscle meat as the first ingredient and doesn't have corn at least in the first 3 ingredients if at all. Fancy feast is a middle grade food with 9lives, friskies whiskas lower grade canned and wellness and merrick upper grade human quality foods. Also, dry food is not proven to be better for teeth. Please read about cat nutrition.

It differs for indoor and outdoor or both. I have a indoor cat that is 14 years old and still full of life. Indoor cats an live anywhere from 11-18+ years! Outdoor cats normally live 4-7 years. Indoor/outdoor cats 8-11+ It also depends on the diet and general health.

Make sure the little muppet drinks enough water when he's on the dry food. Cats normally get their "liquid" from their food so unless they are used to drinking water with dried food it can cause renal problems. My first moggy lasted till he was fifteen. Second, which was one of two, lasted only three years because he got a tumour :-( , his brother is still a big lovable lump at nine. All of mine have been fed on regular tinned food. A reasonable age for a regular "street accident" (not pedigree) mog is between 15 and 20.

Cats tend to live from about 14 years to 20 or so years.
What you've heard about cats not living as long on canned food is totally false. Our cat is fed canned food everyday and he is happily living at 20 years old.

i met a cat that was 25 years old! he was still very active and he liked to follow people around once he got to know you.
but it has little to do with wet or dry food, the key is *quality* food, ie. little to no by-products. in fact, many vets believe wet food is the best for cats because it inherently has every bit of moisture a cat needs. as long as your cat is eating wet food, you know they are getting enough water which is very important for feline health. i give my cat both; the dry is available whenever she wants it and i give her 1/4 can of wet food twice per day (kept in the fridge in a tupperware container). if you buy higher quality food, it costs more but they eat less so it offsets. good luck with your kitty, but remember to appreciate the moments you have with your cat now and don't worry so much about how long he will be around - think to yourself it will be forever :)

cats aren't really supposed to ingest fish. so any product that has a fish base is bad for a cat. my cat is 6 years old, and the vet said she would probably live another 10. some cats can get really old if they are well taken care of. I only give my cat canned food on special occasions, and I make sure it isn't fish-based.

Cats generally can live to be 20-22, but their average lifespan is 15-20 years. Only if your cat's obese, then it will probably die. But you should NEVER let your cat get obese! My friend's cat died of obesity once! Not a good thing!
Hope this helps!
Good luck!

Cats can live a long time, as long as you keep their shots up-to-date. I have a male Maine Coon who will be 16 years old on Oct 3.
