1) A core belief system that is global / universal in scope.
2) A pattern of observance, ritual, practice or worship that derives from those core beliefs.

I omitted any discussion of the supernatural or deity to make sure that it could be applied to atheism or evolution if there was evidence. There is none.

It could be applied to the FSM, as there is the practice of saying, "RAmen."

It cannot be applied to atheism or evolution, as the second portion is not met.

The global scope is necessary as many people have rituals before certain tasks (e.g. surgeons scrubbing in or batters stepping into the box in a certain manner).

I think its a mass following of some sort of teaching involving a belief of how the world came to be/how the world will end/why we are here etc. etc.
Usually involving some form of supernatural diety... or in some cases aliens
