There are many photography schools, and they all teach you something a little different. I went to Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. I had to have a AA just to get in. And then I was there for 3 1/2 years full time photography. Brooks in more Tecknic oriented over ART oriented. Art Center of Design in LA is more ART ORIENTED. IT really all depends on what your final goal will be. I went into Advertising photography. Be prepard to spend a lot of time for very little money at the end. Sence it is ONE OF THE ARTS, BIG COMPANIES REFUSE TO PAY MORE THEN THEY HAVE TO BECAUSE PHOTOG IS so much fun. And there are a zillion people that will do it for nothing just to get a photo in a mag.. I was in it for fifteen years and finally decided I couldn't suport a wife and kids or even myself for 18,000 a year. But if you are already wealthy....... Good luck.

Two of the best Photo schools in the nation if not the world for commercial photography are located in California.
Art Center located in Pasadena and Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara.
That said they are very very expensive. If money is an issue then a Junior college might be an option to get some of the basics down. If you then could work for a good while working as a photo assistant to an established photographer that would give you some of the background you would need.
MOST important for any wishing to start their own photo studio is to take some business courses. Take the basics such as accounting and bookkeeping.
Subscribe to magazines such as Photo District News. It will help with all business aspects that you will need to know.
I also suggest joining an organization such as APA. They have an extensive resource that will help you understand how to price for every type of job and has resources for pretty much every other business situation.

Check with the New York Institute of Photography (nyip.com). They have been in business since 1910 so they must be doing something right. They offer correspondence courses so you can work around your present schedule.
