I'd do things right, for a start!
If what you called "God" was so great and good and all that, there wouldn't be war, there wouldn't be so many poor people, bad wouldn't exist, and the world would be a better place to live in.
I already know all those tales about the devil and the freedom that god gave people, but if he actually cared about his "sons" so much, he wouldn't allow sooo many things that happen to happen. After all, the bible says that everything was created by god. When I buy/get something new, I usually try not to destry it !
That's my opinion...

I would give them reign of their environment, such as a lucid dream but forever, I would prohibit such an environment to affect other individuals but allow common meeting grounds where people can willingly go to for socialization.
I would give people the choice of bypassing severe boredom and depression so they could live their lives for Eternity in a Heavenly bliss.
I would not send them to a cruel harsh world as a test, nor would I create a Hell.. If such a person were to choose to be twisted and horrible he could do so in his own reality but be prohibited to interact with innocent people until such a time that they could coexist.
You asked =) This is a simple version.. I would not be an evil spirited God. I would not even consider myself a God but a fellow inhabitant of that existence, we would all be Gods of our own little fictional realities, harming no one and enjoying life.. I would refuse worship.

As Jonathan Swift wrote the King of Brobdingnag's reply to all of Gulliver's empty boasts that
''You are the most pernicious and odious race of vermin that has ever been suffered to crawl upon the face of the earth.''
I agree with Dean Swift. If I were God, I'd put us all down and put the world out of its misery.

I would ask all nonbelievers why they are so angry with the people that do believe. If I know that somebody doesn't believe in God I feel sorry for that person. Why is it that when somebody doesn't believe in God they're angry when somebody else does? I just don't get that.

God already sacrificed his son for humanity and gave us the choice to live with him forever in heaven. Humanity is a little selfish if you ask me.

Assuming there is an opening in heaven and they need a new god. My first and only will would be to instill in people an over-whelming sense of compassion and empathy for their fellow man. If you cannot hurt others out love for one another then you should not be able to hurt yourself. In short everybody is happy and you got yourself and ole fashion barefoot hippy "Love In".

I'd admit to myself that there was serious design fault and get rid of humanity and start again, but I'd be determined not to make the same mistakes again

Rather than ask 'what can I do for humanity', ask God why he fails to guide humanity.

God has already given humanity His gift. It is up to us to accept it and make use of it.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son."
