I've just noticed this relatively recently. If my cat is around and somebody is whistling to themselves, he seems to get really annoyed/excited by it. He'll start meowing a lot which is kind of unusual since he isn't overly vocal most of the time, and goes over to whoever is doing it.
Is this something that is common to all cats in general? Does their hearing have a sensitivity to more high frequency pitches?

Yes, absolutely, cats are much more sensitive to higher-pitched sounds. They actually react more to female voices than males voices for that very reason. You are really perceptive to have picked up on that!

Cats are HIGHLY sensitive to high pitched sounds. I currently have a cat that will attack the other animals in the house if she is exposed to a prolonged high pitched sound, as it effects her so greatly that she doesn't know how to cope with it.

Wow I applaud you for being concerned about the cat. What I would do is have someone play the guitar in your room and you watch the cat to see how it reacts. Some cats get bothered by loud noises some don't. And it might even get use to the noise.

not sure about other cats, but mine doesn't mind really high sounds, but really hates medium-high sounds (like a b-flat or something) and runs away whenever i make such a sound.
