Because the man was a walking testimony, known BEFORE, and known after. This testimony needed to be spread throughout the land. Once a person has been FREED, they definitely need to tell the world the wonderful things Jesus does.

This is also a shadow of things to come : When the Spirit of God is taken from the world, all the inhabitants of the world, which is left, of the Gentiles (pigs), will be FILLED with a multitude of demons. They will rape, drive insane, bite on each other, beat each other, ect... and will not be able to find death.

From what we see in this portion of Matthew 8 :28-34 the Lord was entreated after casting the demons out of the man into the pigs to " depart from their boarders"
I do not believe that it was the Lord's mission or the will of the Father to take the man away with Him but rather the Lord's life was risked as well as that of the disciples in order to cross the sea of Galilee to meet and deliver this one man in bondage by demons.

This man, remaining here was able to go back to his family and live again to tell of what the Lord has done for him... this man proclaimed in Decapolis, a district of TEN cities ( Mark 5:20) what great things Jesus had done for him and all there marvelled. Sometimes sister.. after the Lord has touched our lives, its our mission to stay where we are and be a testimony of the power of God and to be a means to draw more to know this wonderful Lord.

Good question sister bethy

Mark 5 gives you the answer 18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[c]how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

He was a witness. Both to his family, who had suffered too because of his affliction. Also those that knew him when he was younger. Jesus made them whole and reunited them and I have no doubt that many were saved because he was obedient to Jesus.

Moose ease up and read YOUR Bible. In the Matt account it does not go into more detail. Remember folks Synoptic Gospels. You can read different views of the same event. Each Disciple saw the same thing, but learned different lessons or perhaps viewed some thing the others did not.

Because Jesus knew the man would return to his old ways after a short time, after he went broke. Jesus did not need him around getting in the way. Whoever the pig farmers were got their business wiped out, and wanted nothing to do with Jesus or the man. Seeing a hopeless situation, Jesus departed after having stirred up trouble for these people. This correlates to Jesus' parables about mercenaries, 'hireling' shepherds, and about not being able to serve God and 'Mammon'.
As for the demons, they knew they had a chance to escape destruction by letting Jesus drive them into the swine. Then they had only to get the swine's bodies to die to release them and be free to go into the man again. This is symbolic of the betrayal of the Kingdom to the Gentiles. (There may also be a good chance that the souls of the Gospel characters are alive and well today, resurrected in Gentile people.)

I read this a few days ago!
In Mark, Jesus told him he needed to stay in his own
land and testify. Jesus knew the need and the hearts of
those whom the man would reach specifically on his own.
He knew the strength the man would have in his
testimony as well!
Jesus also said this after the towns people told him
to leave the area and so Jesus was not allowed to preach there, so He told the man he healed to preach for him!
Jesus already knew everything that would happen
when he left in the boat for that land to begin with - before
he even met the man He healed!
I love Jesus!

Well...the answer to the question is in a few verses back. Remember...this man lived near the decapolis...the ten cities, and he was known for his being possesed and no one could constrain him.

Jesus wanted that same man to go back amongst the people who knew him as the possessed man, and wonder, how it was possible to be so immensly changed? Wasn't this a greater demonstration of His power by having the man stay amongst these people versus taking him to places where people did not know him?

(And isn't it ironic that the demons themselves ((a legion no less I may add)) knew who stood before them, and ironic their plea was not to be destroyed?)

Mark 5:19-20 states:

But he would not permit him but told him instead, "Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you."

Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed.

Jesus gave him an important mission. Jesus wanted the man to spread the word of what God had done for him.

With love in Christ.

Jesus told the man to go back to the village and show them the wonderful things God has done for him.

The next time Jesus came around to those parts, the people received him gladly - most likely because of that man's testimony and life ever since Jesus freed him from the demonic influence from his life.

At the very most, "demon sickness" might be psychological because one thinks one is afflicted by a demon. These illnesses can be "cured" with magic or religious ritual if the patient believes it will work. There is no actual physical disease involved, it's all in the mind. Epilepsy is caused by injuries in the brain, not demons.
