Early intervention is the best thing to do for any child that is questionable. The county you live in (USA) has a program that will send someone to your home and evaluate what they think. If they feel she needs help they will do this at no or low cost to parents. And Autisim has so many different levels (names) that its hard to say if this is what she has. The neice should go to the Doctor (pedatrician) for thier opinion. I have put some sites below to help you and your neice. She is lucky to have a aunt like you.

I would think that's normal for a 2 year old, as they can't play cooperatively or even side by side yet. The fact that she has words at all is good. There are more symptoms to autism than just a lack of words:

Echolalia (repetition of syllables)
Rhythmic motion (rocking, arm-flapping)
Long, intense temper tantrums
A decided and definite need for routine
Being unconcerned with adults she is attached to: for instance, my husband tripped on our stairs, and my four year old simply stepped over him and went to watch Blue's Clues.

There are other criteria on many websites. Wikipedia has a good autism article.

its troublesome enough to warrnt further investigation. What do her parents think? Have they addressed the issue with her dr? 22 months is not to young for a diagnosis, and the earlier they begin treatment the better.

Sounds like she just needs more socialization with kids her age. Two-year-olds don't play together; what they do is called "parallel play." It may seem like they are playing together, but they aren't. I work in a daycare center with two-year-olds. Some of them can speak in full sentences, some babble. It all has to do with their exposure to language and people.
