To say "God" is to essentially come to the answer of your question. If there is anyone above or beyond God, then God is not really God but just another created being like us. Nothing comes before God, and nothing has or will ever exist above God. The following is a passage from the Bible that has God explaining this to you:

(Isaiah 45 NIV) 5 I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.…6 so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting men may know there is none besides me. I am the LORD, and there is no other. 14…Surely God is with you, and there is no other; there is no other god. 18 For this is what the LORD says—he who created the heavens, he is God;…I am the LORD, and there is no other. 20 Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from the nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save. 21…And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. 22 Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other.

God is an eternal family of self-giving life and love between The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit. In God, there is Fatherhood, Sonship, and the essence of love in a family-The Holy Spirit. In marriage, our earthly imperfect families image the perfect family: The Holy Trinity (God)! God bless!

Above is concept of human thought. It implies, that above and below applies to God who is beyond opposites and human concepts. Break out of opposites beyond the face of God. Then your somwhere.

In my opinion (which I understand many to do not share and, please do not take offense...) "god" does not exist. He is merely a way to explain the unexplainable and give hope to those who need it... I don't have a problem with those who believe in "him" but I, personally, am not a believer. So, to answer your question, he wasn't anything, he isn't anything, he won't ever be anything.

Us are not created, of created/made.
Them are created, of created/made.

Bad things happen to them: 1Th 5:3.
Good things happen to us: 1Th 5:9.

Them-ward is accounted extinction.
Us-ward is accounted as salvation.
