Just wondering.. Do you have to be threatened to do the right thing? I'm referring mostly to Christianity. Why does it take the threat of severe and eternal punishment to get you to be nice?

Where I get fear. Is from the Threat of HELL. Are you going to tell me Christianity does'nt say; if you don't believe in God and Jesus you're going to hell? Please say that.
Hope it's clear that's the Fear i'm talking about.

Well, have you LOOKED at some people lately? It seems that only FEAR is what can keep people in line in ANY time period....and what better way to convert than to say that you're going to Hell for eternity unless you believe what we do? Seems like a good system to me...so that's why....It's a system of control, why people do what the law says? Because sometimes it is the fear that keeps them from breaking it....I hope I made SOME point in all this....

I've never understood why people think religion is based on fear - when you're not a Christian, you don't believe in eternal punishment, so what's the problem? When you are a Christian, you know that you have been saved from eternal punishment.

The threat of eternal hell is incapable of reforming the sinner. If it had power to reform, then Christ would not have had to been revealed by Jesus.
When you understand Christianity, you do good because you love to, and not because somewhere in thought you hold onto this horrible dark fear.
Those who allow fear to govern them are in need of more faith and understanding, so they can overcome that form of bondage.

Fear makes people easier to control. How many times have you been told "do this or else?" Be a good christian and give the church your money or else you will go to hell. Surrender your civil rights or the terrorists will blow you up. Fear makes people easy to manipulate and control. Kinda sucks.

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Do not fear those who can kill the body, Fear Him that can
kill the body and the spirit.
When you are said to be God-fearing,it means ,you have a conscience. When you are about to commit a sin, you ask yourself, what would God think? That my friend is wisdom.
Did Elijah back off? Did David back off?, Did Jeremiah back off from doing the will of the Father? As you may know the bible is chock full of storys from people who feared the Lord, and for very good reason. No matter what you do in life, no matter what you are in life, God loves you! God wants you to behave.God wants you to share this planet with everyone.
A fair amount of evil will be burned in a fire, The question you want to ask is: Do I want to be thrown in with the rest of them?
Or do you want to Fear God, obey his commandments and make this world that is in the hands of the wicked,a bit better
for those of us that wish for peace.

Its not how it was supposed to be nor how it started. Its how it became... Its Augustine you have to thank for that... And anyway its only true of the Western Churches. Not true of the Eastern or Middle Eastern...

It was about power, not liberation. And when the Roman Church tipped that way Christianity was lost & Christ stayed perpetually on the Cross, unable to come down and save the people he loved....

Religions have always done that. If they couldn't convince 'em with reason and logic they would use the powers of fear, torture and persecution.

Sometimes, even the threat of eternal damnation doesn't make them behave nicely. See examples such as evangelical extremists.

That may be what you have been exposed to, but the Jesus I know is all about love and peace.

Be blessed. :D
