No, you can't charge sales tax unless you have a sales tax permit. You must find out the situations in which you are required to have sales tax permit.

Once you register with the sales tax department, then you must collect sales tax as per the rules, or if you don't collect pay from your business income, and then deposit with the government.

Depending upon your state, you may be required to collect and remit back to the state sales taxes. You will have to apply for a sales tax permit and make monthly reports if your business is required to do so. You will get a chart showing the sales tax percent for your state, county, city at least once a year and should add that to the amount you are paid by your customers. Most cash registers are set to be programmed for this if you are going to use one.

It's not a matter of being okay. It's either required by your state law for what you are selling, or it isn't - you'll have to find that out. If you are required to collect it, then you'll have to register with the state and they'll tell you when you need to send in what you collect, and what info you need to provide to them at that time.

If you collect sales tax, you send it in to the state. If you are supposed to be collecting it and don't, then you are personally responsible for paying to the state what should have been collected.
