I am a university student and I live off-campus on a large hill. My shins have been hurting something terrible when ever I walk and if I try to turn my toes towards my legs. I've been perusing the internet and Yahoo answers for help and what I see is mostly to stop walking. Since walking is how I get anywhere, that's not really an option. I've also heard ice is good. Is there any other advice?

I started hurting more going uphill than downhill. Now it hurts pretty much anytime I'm walking. I don't know how long the distance is, but it makes about a 20 minute walk not counting when I have to wait for traffic to stop and let me cross. But warm soaks sound like a good idea...

Walking down hill always made my shins hurt. After a couple weeks (at most) it should go away as your down hill muscles get used to it.. Evidently those muscles only get strained going down hill, the steeper it is the more they get worked.

I would do warm bath soaks and aspirin for temp relief.

How long is your walk, and how much is down hill? How long u been hurting?

Take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts. Soak for 30 minutes. The Epsom salts will help eliminate the lactic acid that forms on the muscles from over exertion.

Massage an analgesic cream into the sore muscles.

Dehydration can cause severe pain in the muscles. I recommend you drink purified water mixed with Mineral Water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration and the real key is the Mineral Water.

I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body. One tip for athletes: it is healthier to drink a sports drink or water than fruit juice, soda, coffee, or milk during competition or active training periods.

500mg of calcium and magnesium, taken twice daily, can help with diminishing the pain.

Advil liqui capsules work very quickly on pain. Take them four times daily.
