I can't seem to create a sentance in which we would use "yesterday" as an adverb.

Yesterday is already an adverb of time.

I saw you yesterday. (Here it's an adverb)

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away.
I did it yesterday.
Did I see you yesterday or was it the day before?

Most uses of "Yesterday" are adverbial. We occasionally see it as a noun - All our yesterdays; the yesterday we remember

I went to school yesterday.

It modifies "went". Adverbs answer questions (When, how, where, why...) and so this question would be "When?"
