Unless they are getting something couture, they are safe waiting until February to buy dresses - it will take a few weeks for alterations.

I'm getting married in April '08 and am having my girls buy their dresses in November. They've already been looking and trying some on, though, so they can figure out what styles they like (we're doing the David's Bridal navy satin ones...just in whatever style they choose).
I'd say you and the bridesmaids should start gathering ideas now, have them go and try some things on in their own time if they have time and gather some more ideas, then I'd make the final decision and purchase them in January.
The answer above is absolutely correct, many bridal stores have sales in the fall and winter, so October through January is a good time to shop (I'd say February too, but that's starting to become prom season, and then the stores start jacking the prices back up).
Good luck and have fun shopping!

Personally I would start now, I know people that waited 5 or 6 months before the wedding and it was a disaster for all of us. We had to order the dresses 3 months in advance or all of us had to pay a rush fee, it was hard to get everyone to get fitted, and paying for the dresses... I think it's better to give your bridesmaids a little time to get it done so your not worried and your not having to hassle them with it.

I would put the order in for the dresses 6 months before your wedding as a (group order). Fewer mistakes should be made by doing it this way.
I had a problem with a dress for one of my bridesmaids and luckily we had enough time to receive the replacement dress.
The shop noticed that one of the dresses was colored differently and after checking the order she called my house to inform me that a mistake was made. The shop already placed another order in for a replacement and it was easily fixed before my wedding date.
I would start browsing several months before you decide to buy a dress especially if you think that you might buy a style of dress that is not common in the shops. I had a particular style in mind for the girls and it took awhile for me to find it.

Depending on how many bridesmaids you have, and if they are buying their dresses themselves, it's never too early to settle on a dress/color/style you want.
If you are having the dresses made, you might want to start looking at material/prices.
Also take into consideration weight gain/loss of your prospective attendants, as that IS an important consideration.
And...again...last, but not least...price...you have to have *some* kind of budget or pricerange you want to keep to...also if your attendants are paying for their own dresses, consider their ability to afford the kind of dress you want them to wear (remember this especially if it's your wedding).
Good luck!!! Hope at least one thing here helped even a little!

Bridal shops are notorious for having really good sales during the fall and winter months, as far less wedings take place during those seasons. So I would say you should try to get the dresses you want while they're on sale- maybe around November of this year? That way, you'll also have plenty of time for alterations, fittings, etc.

You can order them to arrive at least a month ahead of time. That way there would be time for the alterations that will need to be done.
Congratulations!!
PS You won't want to order them TOO soon. If you order them six months ahead, some ladies will no longer be wearing the same size. I've never seen anyone involved in a wedding who didn't want to lose a few pounds beforehand.

You need to have something picked out by Jan '08 and ordered by Feb '08. Talk to the store clerk because different dresses take different amounts of time to get in. Some dresses take 3-5 months to get in and then you need to give your girls time to get them altered. The alterations can take a while too if you use a bridal store.

6 months before.....to be safe. No last minute running around and waiting on fittings and alterations.
