thanks to everyone for your answers. this is pretty much what i figured too,ive never gone out and paid a big price for a dog and i never will i just dont see any sense in it with so many great dogs already needing a home, i do have a shih-tzu and a "mutt" oh wait..maybe hes a hybrid hes a pekenese and pomeranian lol and i tihnk i may be getting a yorkie in the next few days...but all are rescue dogs and i didnt pay a dome to get them so i have more to put in their upkeep (rescued not from a shelter..but before they actually got to that point) the shih tzu was thrown in a corn crib by her owner with her 2 litter mates and left there and fed half the time..and she is just the sweetest thing. i dont think people ought to be allowed tocharge a big price for a dog. then there is no social stigma stuck on a breed and nor pressure to have a certain kind of dog for people trying to keep up with the joneses.

"Hybrid" is a trendy term slapped on a mixed breed dog to avoid the 'stigma' of MUTT. This undoubtedly raises the prices of these poor critters from the unscrupulous shmuck who's pumping them out for a buck.

A true hybrid is a mix of 2 species: a mule is a donkey x horse cross- it is a hybrid.

Hybridization has produced thousands of varieties of flowers and vegetables as well.

See, the stupid 'designer' people don't even know English. (surpise, surprise)

They're the same. By definition, "breeds" have traits which breed true when they're bred with other dogs of the same breed. Spots for dalmatians, white coats for samoyeds for example. Everything else is a cross breed or a mutt. Hybrid means some breeder is trying to mix the characteristics of a couple different breeds into a new dog. Until it breeds true however it's a mixed breed.
Hybrid is a term they're using to rip off folks into thinking they're getting something special. A few years ago a cocker and poodle was a mutt and was lucky to be given away. Now they're $100.00s of dollars.. Don't fall for it.

A mutt is a mixed-breed dog without a fancy name. A hybrid is a mutt with a fancy name and a high price tag.

...Hey, that gives me an idea! Anyone want to play Name that Mutt? Maybe we can help the shelters out! Surely people will pay a higher adoption fee if the mutt has a fancy name! Ready...set.....name this mutt!:

Mutts are made up of two or more breeds within their background. Hybrids are two different species; wolf and dog; coyote and dog; fox and dog.

Some people will try to slap a label on something 'common' to make it sound more exotic but a Labradoodle is still just a mutt with one parent being a Labrador and the other being a Poodle. No matter what you call it!

Definition: Hybrid, strictly defined, an offspring that is a cross between different species, genera, or, in rare cases, families. More loosely defined, a hybrid can also be a cross between parents of different subspecies or varieties of a species.

I totally agree. Mixed breeds are mutts no matter what fancy name you give them or how much you charge. They also used to be called mistakes. I hate the current "designer" dog trend, since it's usually just an opportunity for someone to make some bucks breeding dogs, and an excuse to use any old dog for breeding instead of conforming to breed standards and having appropriate health checks (such as hip x-rays and eye exams) done.

Most people have answered this incorrectly, howldine being one of the exceptions.

'Hybrid' is a term people incorrectly use to refer to crossbreeds if they don't want to say 'mutt' (which has bad connotations). A hybrid is in fact a cross between two SPECIES, e.g a lion and a tiger (they exist). Crossing two BREEDS is not hybridisation.

I don't think anyone with any sense has anything against crossbreeds, people just have problems using the term 'mutt' - understandably so as it's really just a slang term that doesn't mean much.

Chalice

EDIT: 'Stephanie Loves Sammy' sent me a fairly rude, and incorrect email, to tell me that lions and tigers are the same species, when in fact we all know they are not. 'Feline' is not a species. She then accuses ME of not being educated.

there is no difference.. back yard breeders and millers use the term "hybrid" because it sounds less derogitory than "mutt"

"hybrid" is actually the wrong term. A hybrid animal is a cross of two different species or sub species. All breeds of domestic dog are the same specie.

Mutts, otherwise known as mongrels, are not only of mixed but often indeterminate breed. A hybrid is the offspring of two dogs of different breeds as produced through human manipulation for specific genetic characteristics. So, no I don't agree that they are the same. This specific manipulation is basically how most breeds we know today have come about.

absolutely nothing! (whether accident or on purpose, a mixed dog is a mutt nothing else)
oh but these are all the rage paying up to $2000 for a mutt they could adopt from the pound but no they insisit that their dog isnt a mutt she is a designer breed. or a mutt is a dog with three different breeds in her not two. plus both her parenst were akc registered and she can be ckc registered(dont mean canadaian).
Give me a break people i totally agree with you no ethical breeder would produce mutts and guess what these "designer breeds" have been in shelters for years they arent a new breed, they just have a cutesy name given to them by a back yard breeder.

Look at these "designer breeds" for adoption there are thousands more:
