This is exactly what they did to me.
You can choose to go to sleep or be simply numbed. I chose sleep because I would have gotten bored...if you choose to go to sleep, it's like the whole thing takes 5 minutes!
They will give you lots of groggy meds. You may feel some pain, but not alot--they put me on codeine, and that stuff really works! Most people sleep alot on it, but I did not.
Be sure to stock up on lots of soft food, nothing too hot or cold. Applesauce, warm soup, mashed potatoes, broth, jello, etc. Be sure to stay hydrated too.
When things start to get painful and it's not time for a new dose yet, get teabags warm and wet, and then stick them back where your wisdom teeth were and bite down gently. For some reason, it really helps.
Your face will swell up and make you look like a chipmunk. You will probably feel kind of crappy, but if pain meds work for you, it shouldn't be too painful. The doctor will explain things like dry socket to you, just to let you know what is normal pain and what is a problem.
Good luck! Be sure to get lots of movies and reading material to pass the time. I was unable to do anything for 3 days afterwards; I have had friends unable to do anything for a week.

I had to have 3 wisdome teeth cut out of the gum. I wasn't knocked out but I was very relaxed and didn't really care what was going on. I had an IV in my hand for this. They will put a clamp of sorts to hold your mouth open. They will cut the gum, remove the tooth and, if necessary, stitch the gum (I had one of the three that didn't need stitches). Then they will pack your mouth with gauge and tell you to keep that in for however long they say. It doesn't hurt when they are doing it but you may get some pain and swelling when the numbing wears off. I was given pain pills but didn't need to use them that often. I was told to eat only soft foods (mashed potatoes, jello, etc) and was given a little plastic syringe that was used to rinse the stitched area to remove any foods to avoid infection. They also said not to drink anything through a straw for a few days afterward. I was a little swollen the next day but wasn't in any real pain...but all people are different. I'm sure you'll do fine.

I had the same exact problem. I decided to let them put me out during the ordeal. ( I had several options- this seemed the best to me) The meds will make you feel lightheaded and numb, almost like you're floating on a cloud. That might scare you a bit, but just remember that it's just meds and there isn't anything wrong going on. The next thing you know- you'll be awake and your teeth are out.
They'll give you pain medication for the next day or two. The pain isn't bad- more irritating than anything else- and will pass after a few days. Your diet will be restricted as well to let the opening where your teeth were heal.
Don't sweat it- it's a piece of cake. The pain is minimal.

You can be put asleep if you want. I just had all four of mine cut out. They will give you pain killers to keep you comfortable after wards. Just eat soft foods, and do not use a straw or smoke, this will give you dry socket, and from what I hear that hurt ALOT! Do everything they tell you, and within a few days it shouldn't hurt at all! It has been two weeks (?) since I had mine pulled. The gums are still sensitive, but I can eat normal now, and am fine. Trust me it is worth it in the end. You don't want those pretty teeth going crooked!

First of all, you can choose not to do it. I have the same, and the doctors said I had to take them out so that they don't cause any problems later on, but I chose not to do anything until they actually created some problem. I haven't had any problem in 15 years since then, thank God. Of course, if they do create a problem, it will be more difficult to fix then than it is now. It's a risk.
If you do have the surgery, it will be with local anaesthetic. it would be stupid to be put to sleep, it is much more dangerous than the actual operation. My husband had his wisdom teeth pulled out, and he had no problem at all. No pain, no bleeding, nothing. But I've heard other friends who had bleeding etc. So it's really up to you and the doctor. Good luck, it's a pretty standard operation. If you have any pain after the anaesthesia, take some paracetamol or ibuprofen. Don't take aspirin though, it may cause bleeding.

Did your dentist say they are impacted, or are they just below the surface of your gums? If they are impacted, the surgery is a little more complicated, but you won't know, because you'll be asleep!
It is scary thinking about getting your wisdom teeth out, but just think about how many people go through it and survive to talk about it! :) They will probably put you to sleep, in which case you will either get an IV in your arm for general anesthesia or get laughing gas (less likely). You will be out like a light and then wake up when it's over!
Afterwards your mouth may be sore, but if you follow the instructions they give you (like not spitting or sucking through a straw, using ice packs, taking the antibiotics they provide you to prevent infection) you will be fine. Your dentist or oral surgeon will advice you on pain management and will let you know how to differentiate between normal pain and pain associated with an infection (e.g. dry socket).
They usually give you some strong pain meds, like Percocet. I personally didn't take it when I had mine out because really strong pain meds can make you nauseous, but it was nice to know it was there if I needed it. My biggest problem was actually not tremendous pain from my teeth, but pain in the corners of my mouth because I have a tiny mouth and they had to stretch it open really wide to get the teeth out!
My advice: keep chapstick handy, rent some movies, and plan to just VEG out afterwards. You won't look like a beauty queen with your swollen face, but it's normal-- practically a rite of passage these days-- and I promise you will get through it!! Hang in there, and good luck!

My son recently had four cut out and was put to sleep. He was so stressed about it hurting and dreading it for days before his appointment, but afterwards he couldn't remember a thing, he remembers them putting the needle in his hand and then waking up when it was all over !!!! he was so pleased it wasn't as bad as he thought. The only bad bit was having to bite down on swabs for most of that day to stop the bleeding
( swabs taste YUK!), but as long as you keep the pain under control with pain medication and take your antibiotics, all will be well. He even felt well enough to go back to work the next day. Hope it goes as well for you. And your not the only person who fears the dentist....LOL

i have had my wisdom teeth taken out like that too! He put me under NOVACAINE, which is a very good numbing agent. The only thing that hurts is getting poked with the needle which only takes about 2 seconds :) after that u dont feel a thing, as long as u have the novacaine he can rip out ur tongue and u wouldnt feel it. You might be a little sore a few hours after it wears off, no big deal. You will also need alot of gauss in your mouth to stop the blood, u cant feel nething so ull bleed and not no it. so no sweat, chillax and ull be ok
-Good Luck

Your oral surgeon should answer all your questions before you get started, but..
I had all 4 of mine cut out too. I was put to sleep while they did it, then mom drove me home while I was still groggy. I had pain meds to take for the next few days(I don't remember how many). You're surgeon should also tell you how to take care that the area doesn't get infected--maybe rinse with water, eat soft foods for a few days, etc.
You should feel better with a week I would think. Let your doctor know if you have any questions or concerns, though. If you don't ask, they won't know you don't know.

I was really scared. I cried in the chair. I had to get all 4 cut out, and I had an iv, gas, local anestesia(needle in jaw). I didn't feel a thing. I also had codine pills for the next five days, so I slept a lot. I didn't feel a thing. I hope you're as blessed as I was.
PS: people tried to tell me that it would hurt too.
