I am 37; obviously a bit older than the usual 20 year old wanting into the Police academy. Do you think age hampers peoples chances in the eyes of the Department?

I retired from military service at 38 and was hired by a local law enforcement agency.

Federal agencies have a mandatory maximum age restriction however, many of the local, county, and state agencies do not.

Best wishes.

No - in fact at your age you bring a lot of good people skills and judgement that most officers don't learn at 21.

When you go in for your oral interview, you can talk about your age and what you have learned about yourself, the social skills and outside work experiences that will contribute to your ability to do the job.

Just make sure that you are in good physical shape. The PT at the academy is hard enough as it is, and your recovery time is going to be just a tiny bit slower than your younger counterparts; so make sure you get enough rest and take supplements that help your body recover quickly.

Best of luck to you.

NO! My fiance just graduated with an older man in the academy. We have since all became friends and I think he does an excellent job! If anything he is more respected by his fellow cadets and even the instructors. Go for it!

I was in the academy when I was 25. The oldest person in my class was 50. If you can physically perform the job, more power to you.

Since you are of older age, focus on physical training. But keep in mind you are older and have "life experience" which most 20 year old's don't.

A lot of civil service agencies cut off new recruits eligibility at 35. You still have a shot at some agencies though, get a copy of their hiring standards.

depends whether it is a badge and a gun you want wear, or is it, you really want to do police work.

For this, if you were accepted, could you refrain from drinking 72 hrs before your shift starts.

Your are assured to do excellent police work with a clear head.

Wish you well!
