Going on 5 years this coming March. (USA in WW two for 39 months) A rag tag group of men with basic weapons wearing blue jeans and tennis shoes are putting the hurt on the fine American troops. Is this shocking?

One thing you are not is "erudite."
From the tone of the question, it looks like you are a member of the blame America first, last and always crowd. If you think you can do better. Go over and do it.
You cannot even count correctly. The US got into WWII on 12-7-41 and ended it in August of 1945

The U.S. has been involved in several "Wars on Terror." Fighting the Barbary Pirates took 30 years. The interesting thing there was the U.S. started it and the French finished it. Florida was adopted into the U.S. as a result of a War on terror and the U.S. started the Spanish/American war as a result of a false belief of a terror attack on the USS Maine.
As far as the hurt goes, they are doing a very poor job of it. Water drowns about 3,000 British children a year which is about how U.S. soldiers died in Iraq since the start.
The U.S. actually was involved in Japan and Germany for 9 years of reconstruction. Here the war was done in days and the reconstruction has been going on for years, but still not the nine years it took to reconstruct Germany and Japan.

Actually they are just defending themselves now more than anything. Our troops are there teaching the Iraqi military how to be a military. (Not all our tricks of course) We are there "teaching a man to fish," you know the saying. If we pull out, their army won't be strong enough to fight off the guys in tennis shoes and someone like Saddam will go right back into power. Plain and simple.

"WE" are in Iraq cuz if we leave sectarian civil wars will lead to a massive genocide. If you don't believe this, read the Time article on the Shi'ites and the Sunnis. It doesn't matter if we ****** up or not going into Iraq, we've gotta stay there even if it lasts 20 years. And it usually takes about that long for any occupied territory to submit.

With your background you should know that the politicians lost every military action they touched since they won't allow the military to do what they can do... "let loose the dogs of war"...
